View Full Version : Palsonic DVD Player - Help needed

I recently bought a Palsonic DVD 5000 DVD Player.
The DVD player is stated as being capable of playing SVCD, VCD, CD, DVD, CD-R and CD-RW, as well as being MultiZone/Region capable (capable of playing all regions: 1-6).
I purchased some DVDs, few of which are Widescreen (The Skulls, The Matrix, etc), but I don't want to watch these movies with the black bars at the top/bottom of the screen. Does anyone know if there is any way for me to play these DVDs in non-widescreen format, or what a DVD player 'requires' to remove the black bars from the top and bottom of the screen?
Also, if it isn't possible to remove the bars on my Palsonic DVD 5000 DVD player, does anyone know and other DVD players that can play SVCD, VCD, CD, CD-R, CD-RW and DVD, along with all regions, plus have the capability to remove the 'widescreen bars', and how much this would cost/where can I get one from?
Thankyou,
Help would be greatly appreciated.

This will fix it:Full Screen Converter (http://dvdmedia.ign.com/dvd/image/psgoggles_lg.jpg)
OK, now we've had fun:
Please, do your self a favour and go to http://www.widescreen.org/index.shtml and have a look at the explanations and examples there.
If you still think zooming in on the centre of the screen
and in the process removing up to 45% of the movie is
a truly sensational movie-going experience, then press
the zoom button on your DVD remote.
If the Palsonic doesn't have this feature - there are plenty
of players that do.
The other alternative is what I did. I hated the empty space
above and below the screen so much - I bought a widescreen
TV.

Okay, thanks.
So, do you know of any DVD players that actually have all the Palsonic DVD 5000 capabilities + Widescreen compatability? If so, what and where?
Also, when using a widescreen TV, what happens if I were to watch a non-widescreen movie?
Thanks

ThanksYou just zoom it up, it's an ordinary feature of widescreen TVs to clip the top and bottom of a 4:3 signal (which will only cut out the black bars). I don't have a widescreen TV myself, but the Samsung I do have has a neat 16:9 feature :)
Also, yes I like to watch movies in their correct ratio - but many films are shot in Super35 or Open Matte to begin. For instance rent Gattaca, or Payback which include both widescreen and pan and scan ansd you can see the pan and scan version dosen't just chop off all the sides, it expands the top and bottom a bit too. There's a good clip of this process on the Terminator 2 UE DVD that shows the croping for Widescreen/Pan&Scan.

Not everyone can afford $2000-$3000 for a decent widescreen tv. :(

Philip - use the Zoom button on the remote. This is at the bottom left-hand corner of the remote. With some DVD players this can result in a blocky picture, just like mosiac tiles. Refer to pages 9 and 33 of the manual that came with your player. Most recent TVs also have a zoom function as well. Zooming removes the content on the sides of the picture. I would recommend you enjoy seeing the whole screen.

I could'nt do anything but laugh at your comment antman, for starters why would anyone even buy a 66cm widescreen, which you can get for probably $1000, id have a normal 68cm before i bought a 66 widescreen unless you want to sit 3 foot away from it ??
I have a sony 68 cm 4.3 tv and would never concider buying a 66cm, they are a joke
Not everyone has money to buy new tv's, and hate to tell you this but dvd players where around before widescreen tv's so i guess we all had to watch movies in 4.3 then.
I guess the sign of a movie lover is to enjoy the movie on what ever you can afford too, for some people with more dollars its there very own HT rooms, others its just go to the cinamas, and people like me is just watch it on what i have at home
Ohh i wasnt trying to be rude or obnoxious either :dD
Lets hope that you can give us all our very own widescreen tv's so we can hopefully " get it " as you said
