I think the real reason it is being done is mainly pressure from content
providers.
Content providers want this so that it is harder to record stuff off the TV
and distribute it.

Anyone else know any reasons why they use watermarks?

So consumers with pay TV don't get confused between the channels

Aren't they smart enough to figure out what they are watching by looking
at the content?

that won't stop someone downloading the episode.

if i wanted to see a show that hadn't aired yet, or that i'd missed, i
wouldn't care if it had the logo down the bottom.

But it does stop pirate outfits in asia producing bootlegs (especially the
really good "cant-tell-from-the-real-thing" bootlegs that I have heard about)

It's not hard to distribute it though. It's fairly easy to remove the
watermark. There are programs that do exactly that.

I found it invaluable the other day when I had to retune my channels.

That's the public reason, not the real reason

Damn! You were lucky. Last time I had to retune I kept getting ads, which is
when they don't use the watermarks.

Lol, so THAT's why Dancing with the Stars - Australian Series 1 isn't
available on DVD in Malaysia.

They are both finally out on DVD (at least series 1)... So DVD-Rips would be
better than ABC.. Wait, ABC doesn't even watermark do they?

Well those logo removal things aren't perfect. They do a decent enough job
provided the logo is simple, but some ghosting and distortion is always left
of even the most transparent logos.

They can't afford to and there's no point. Who's going to pirate something
that's on the ABC?

But you can't make out the original watermark so they're effective.

Who cares? When I do captures from telly I don't worry about removing the
watermark.
