This kid wasn't even licenced!
Maybe we could have a power to weight ratio for unlicenced drivers
too!?

Teenager dies in fiery crash
December 21, 2004

A TEENAGER was burned to death after the car he was driving left a
road in the West Australian coastal town of Denmark.

His Holden Commodore careered into two trees before splitting in half
and bursting into flames, police said.

The 16-year-old, who did not hold a valid WA driver's license and was
not the owner of the car, was driving along South Coast Highway at
around 10.30pm last night.

Police are attempting to identify the teenager using DNA and dental
records, while crash investigators are looking into whether excessive
speed was a factor in the crash.

Since V6 C'dores have become cheap transport (VN-P-R) a lot of youngsters
are buying them and utilising there lower-geared squirt potential (off the
lights and carving traffic) I've noticed. Prior, it was the relatively
gutless models,...

The answer is bleeding obvious. Pass a law to make it illegal for young
people to have car crashes. This way P platers and unlicensed drivers are
protected. We can then relax when our children go out driving.

That doesn't make sense. Did they change the gearing by VY to
eliminate this low geared off-the-line characteristic?

Yesterday, I was alongside a VY SV6 at a set of lights in an
80 zone.

From a standing start to 90 (when I backed off to cruise), My
AU2 LPG wagon had half a car length on him and it sounded like
he was seriously trying. :-) He was certainly trying harder
than I was...

Wait till you take on a XZ SV6....the auto changes at 6800!
So you'll really know if he's trying.

Yes they did

With an auto it's easy to notice

Get your hands on a VR and from a standing start apply about 1cm to the
accelerator,
you will feel the torque hit the road

Now repeat with a VY and it will barely move

Don't know about the gearing but VT body shape V6's are piss weak compared
to the earlier VN-VS commodores. My in-laws own a VX(bought new) and I was
amazed at the lack of straight line performance compared with their old
car which was a VP(also bought new). My guess would be the extra weight,
the car *feels* a whole lot heavier than an early commodore.

I'm actually surprised you weren't further in front as I've driven a few
L6 AU falcons and they seem to be very responsive and more "V8 like"
compared to the (VT-VY)V6 commodores. It wasn't supercharged, was it?

I was under the impression that they changed the hare trigger throttle
calibration from around VR/S rather than gearing??

AFAIK the ECU has been recalibrated so it feels less responsive off the
line but in a 400m race the VX car should win.
The VN-VS feels quick off the line but its just the initial throttle
response that gives a false impression.

VZ electronic throttle control is really wierd, it requires you to
push it a long way to get any response.
It needs a switch to recalibrate it when being used with gusto....I
have a feeling that pushing the 'power' switch might change the
calibration, but I didn't get a chance to really check that.

I haven't been able to find much in the way of reliable 0-400's for early
V6's but here's some of what I've found,

VP V6 0-400 = 15.5

VR V6 0-400 = 16.6

VY V6 0-400 = 16.79

Perhaps I've been spoiled as the mob I worked for has every model C'dore in
all bodies. They were quick off the mark,...for whatever reason,..my theory
was first gear (especially) gearing. If you flattened it, it was always in
front and that was a stationwagon.

Interestingly,..the mechy said the local GM dealership were getting a few
back with differential problems. They blamed (apart from 'driving style)the
lower gears in the automatics.
