View Full Version : EF thermo fan speeds

I have a suspicion my thermo fans aren't working properly on my EF XR8.
I've learnt tonight that the fans are multi speed (2 speed for drivers side,
3 speed for passengers side according to the manual). I know that my fans
are at least turning, but I don't know if they are picking up the higher
speeds. I've checked the 4 relays associated with the fan control and they
are all fine.
I'm thinking of borrowing a photo-tacho from work to check the speeds. But
even if I do find the high speed is not kicking in, can anyone suggest a
possible cause, given that the relays are healthy?

They don't have 3 rotational speeds as such, but 3 stages. But that's on the
EL. I have a suspicion that the EF only has 2 stages.
The computer can drive them in 3 ways - Passenger fan only @ 12v (full),
Passenger and Driver side fans wired in series for 6v each or roughly half
speed, and Passenger and Driver fans in parallel for 12v each or both on
full.
With the air con on and the interior fan set to boost it should run both
fans on full. At all other times they are dependant on coolant temp and
ambient air temp, but I can tell you that it takes a fair way up the gauge
to reach the full on stage.
I used to have problem with my EL wagon (6 cyl) towing our ski boat up the
hills around Tumut. Once the temp gauge started to climb and the fans
finally kicked in they didn't have the flow to bring the temp back down
quick enough. We're talking steep hills, 1500kg of boat and ambient temps of
35 to 40. I had the cooling system fully checked but in the end it came down
to the factory settings for engaging the fans were too high for the sort of
work I had it doing. I ended up adding two fan override switches - Switch
one on for low and two on for high. I would switch it on at the base of the
mountains and never had a problem again.
They were easy to install - I just tapped into the loom off the computer and
wired the switches to take those lines to ground. I cant tell you the
pinouts on the EF as it uses the different computer. Try fordforums.com
Hope that helps - Pat.
P.S. - check the base ignition timing - too much retard can cause it.

Thanks for that, Pat
I'd considered the EL fan override thing myself due to towing a laden
trailer up steep & slow mountain roads: I didn't like how the temp gauge was
climbing, & seem to remember the fans kicking in only when it seemed too
hot already.
