View Full Version : Which DVD Recorder up to $600

I'm looking to buy a DVD recorder without breaking my rather tight budget.
I was willing to spend up to $600, but obviously less would be better. One
of the main reasons I want the recorder for is to transfer easily some older
VHS tapes across to DVD before they die completely. Does anyone have any
suggestions? I saw a Centrex DRX -9100 for $398 at Betta Electrical with
Component Video Input - has anyone had any experience with one of these
machines? I am also interested in the Pioneer DVR320 as I have had several
Pioneer products in the past that I've been happy with - does anyone have
any positive/negative feedback on this model?

Any info, especially on the Centrex would be greatly appreciated...

I have a rather large suspicion that the Centrex is just a rebadged
Digitrex - can anyone confirm this? I have read nothing but bad things
about Digitrex DVD Recorders...

Whats wrong with getting a combined DVD receorder // VHS receorder.Like the
new Panasonic DMRE75V. With the DMR you can copy material direct, from Vidio
to DVD or DVD to Video The unit has twin tuners to record differant programs
to both DVD and Video at the same time. The cost is around $1000

There are also DVD receorders out there with a Hard drive, which you can
store recordings on before recording them to DVD transfur. Pioneer's new
range starts with the DVR320, at $699 [ no hard drive] through to the
DVR520H for $1299 with 80gb HD and the DV720 with 160gb hard drive for
$1699

While this might be a bit more then your budget, your also getting
considerably more for your money. And these days all prices wopuld be
negotiable for cash.

Only buy a DVD recodered with a HD and digital tuner. You are wasting your
money right now. Wait 6 months. Remember analogue TV switches off in 3
years.

The problem is that no such product exists in Australia at the moment. The
closest is the Samsung combination STB/VHS/DVD player, but then it is only
VHS!

The digital "spin Doctors" might tell you that, But I think you will find
that, there is considerable work to be done, for the television
broadcasters, to get these services up and running, and while you people in
the Cities might enjoy your programming , the Country areas are another
story. We only get ABC and SBS, as thats all the uplink to mount Mooble
provides for, The 10,7 and 9 services are so far in the future, no one even
bothers to inquire. Do you have full services in the Cities yet, ?????

As for Australia wide coverage, That will never happen, The Aurora service
works quite well now for remote areas, and will remain for long into the
future

Then we have the problem of full Digital T.V's and all the crap that goes
along with it.
Name one retail outlet [ apart from Len Wallis Audio] that sells affordable
[cough, cough] digital TV sets, and please don't tell me that the prices will
drop, We simply don't have the population to have a viable market to
dictate to manifacturers, whats wanted in this country, We get the
"left-overs" from the rest of the World market. After they have desided that
it's not viable to stock. Let alone sell.

You dont need a HD digital set. You can do very nicely with SD.

And there are dozens of companies selling SD STBs. They would not be doing
so if they did not think Australia was just the arse end of the world.

And plenty of TVs handle SD signals, not including all those LCD and Plasma
TVs, that have dropped to around $2,000 for a 68cm WS version. What were
they 5 years ago? Around $15,000.

Finally, in 3 years time you will only be seeing SBS and ABC in digital in
the country.

LCD and Plasma are not digital, what planet do you come from again,
they require a terrestrial receiver to operate, and some also require a TV
tuner. Most LCD's are only a monitor.

So why would anyone bother, ??? This digital; terrestrial thing was
thrown out of a lot of European countries, as unworkable, in favour of
satellite delivery, and frankly
with this country being the size it is, satellite is the only practicial way
of doing it.
In fact we have a ABC, SBS, Central 7, Imparja service now being transmitted
in digital, and just like your little terresttrial receiver things, its
converted back to analogue, in the receiver.
But talking of receivers, I have a satellite // terrestrial combined
receiver, here at the moment. "fortec-Star Diamond lifetime. they also
make a model with CI slots the
Diamond Ultra 5100.

Not everyone even has an outdoor aerial as being against planning rules.
What makes you think that people will put up an outdoor dish?

Many digital STB work very nicely with an indoor aerial.

Here we go, degenerating into a little name calling slanging match, Which
is tipical
of your kind, No doubt cathlic educated. rant, rant, Blah,Blah. O'well back
to school in a week or two, then we can get back to normal..
..
My question was , What Televisions, Plasma's, LCD screens will except a
pure digital signal, and the answer is none. But no you change the subject
to Single Definition, which we where not discussing. and also requires
Digital//analogue conversion. The question was never about the attributes of
SD, But digital transmissions without the need for a terrestrial receiver
[converter]
And as you have no idea, you resort to abuse. Very mature, I,m sure.

As for digital programming via satellite, Packer's got nothing to do with
it, there far to busy, attempting to get there programming excepted on the
Pay providers bouquat of channels, where incedently ABC and SBS are
transmitted now in Digital. This service will very soon carry channel's 7, 9
and 10. Once they get the advertising worked out. This alread happens on the
Cable services. So why would anyone want to bother with yet another
transmission, that is only good for the Cities and still leaves the Country
and Outback areas devoid of a TV service, Apart from the satellite delivered
Aurora service.

But as your head is so far up your arse, YOU have not noticed that yet.
Someone should block the tube you breath through.

As for people not wanting satellite dishes on there roofs, since the
introduction of Optus C1, with it's increased signal power, the same dish
which is used for pay TV, could also be used for regional {non-
terrestrial }digital broadcasting.

As for my terrestrial // satellite combined receiver, If you want one of
those, you will need to import yourself. As they are not available here yet,
and when or if , they will be at an inflatted price,
http://www.fortecstar.com. and http://www.wizardsatellite.com They
currently retail from Wizard at $300 plus freight
which is no money at all, when you consider what your getting.

Your question was:

"Name one retail outlet [ apart from Len Wallis Audio] that sells
affordable

You are the one changing the subject to:

"What Televisions, Plasma's, LCD screens will except a
pure digital signal"

No memtion "pure" in your original statement.

But no, then you change the subject :

> to Single Definition,

That is Standard Definition. And I did no such thing:

And what did I say?:

"You can do very nicely with SD"

And that hole in the head heard something else.

And you forgot this gem from you:

Me: And there are dozens of companies selling SD STBs.

Basset: Dozens of Company's so name 5..
