xbox issues

I have an xbox that is about a year old. Recently a problem has arisen where
games, even brand new games, freeze up or give me a "Disk Dirty or Damaged"
error. I have seen some info in the Net about the Thomson drive on certain
Xboxes and how it has a problem on older Xboxes because some that were on
market around the time I bought it had the Thomson drives and that Samsung
or Phillips drives will work if you spend around $100 to get it repaired by
Microsoft (sometimes even if you do get it repaired by Microsoft it still
doesn't work.). If you have any solutions to this issue please reply with
helpful info.
