Not at all new - it's been around for quite a while.
No servers in Australia so there are send/receive delays. Annoying. Also,
skype has weird credit card authorisation routines (not visible to users)
that result in CC authentication hassles at times.
Firefly by Freshtel www.freshtel.net is a little more expensive but calls to
Australian numbers work really well. Overseas is good too.
Similar to Skype, calls between Firefly/Freshtel users are free.

Do they have an Australian server or are calls routed via North
America?

Yes they have an Australian server. There is no noticable delay when using
Freshtel/Firefly. Its an excellent service and far superior to Skype.

Yep. Based in Melbourne. A nice addition is that calls are priced in A$
and you pay in A$ so no FX mysteries.
