Given the recent recent codeshare agreement and access to caped rates, I'm
planning to migrate Telstra > 3.

As there are not any decent UMTS / W-CDMA 2100MHz enabled PDA's (Motorola do
have a Symbian based A1000 available), I'm looking for a phone similar to my
current Nokia 6100. Paying off a phone for 24 months is probably a little
too long, given that I'd upgrade in 2006 when there are a lot more options,
so am looking at a phone to use for the next 18 months, with some resale
value afterwards.

Handset wise, there isn't anything compariable to a Nokia 6100 with 3G
functionality - Nokia 7600 does not do videotalk, it appears they aren't
that small yet. LG's U8138 is fast and has a good cramshell form factor, tho
lacks storage upgrade and hi-res camera/flash.

Sonyericsson's Z1010 (their first 3G) has been out for over a year now, size
is a little too large. What I do like is the recently launched V800 -
exclusively available from Vodafone UK (launching a couple of months ago).
It has had some great reviews, in Sweden during November V800 sales were
greather than all other 3G handsets combined. Quite expensive tho - there is
actually one on ebay in AU, it will go for $700+

URL for dreaming:

I think I will have to settle for the SE Z1010 or LG U8138.

I think Three requires you to buy a phone for each connection to their
network and doesn't provide USIM cards alone. However you may be able to go
for the cheapest phone & then use a second-hand alternative.

It will be interesting to see what happens when Three shares it's
transmitters with Telstra from mid year. Maybe the competition will demand a
USIM only service.

I use a Motorolla A925 (given free after a year with Three as a concession
for reducing the $99 monthly cap limit to $500) and find it good for most
basic services. Symbian probably allows for more sophisticated services. Then
again my first NEC 808 wasn't bad either.

Real choice & competition will come from Microsoft O/S, faster WCDMA and
much better batteries!

Yes one phone, one account, that's enough.

Have CDMA as a fall-back.
