View Full Version : Buying camera from US
Hi all, does anyone here have experience buying gear from the US? I am
looking for a Sony DSC-U60 , has been discontinued here and although it can
be bought here, - for what it is - its too expensive and I can buy it
substantially cheaper ( in theory) from the USA.
Has anyone had any dealings with Broadway photo in New york?
And what would I expect to pay in freight and additional costs?
What shipping time frame should I expect.
Cheers
Tom

Scam merchants - bait and switch - that is if you get anything at all!

Best to use B&H or Adorama, I have used both and great service, etc.

B&H probably more organised than Adorama, B&H ship POst, UPS, or FEdEx (your
choice); on the B&H site their is a freight calculator.
B&H have the camera you want for USD199-95.
If a first time deal with them and paying by credit card they have a
requirement that you fax them a photocopy of the front & back of your card.
Have you tried KEH? They are new & second hand dealers, who also provide
good service (I have bought from them many times).

So, I am 65 and she is 19? I happen to believe that in this world you get
what you pay for.

For the big ticket items, do you automatically get caught by Aussie Customs for
GST and customs duty please or do just have to be unlucky (I realise this
subject has been broached previously) ?
Good info on this at http://www.customs.gov.au/site/page.cfm?u=4376

GST is payable on the total cost of the goods plus freight [i.e. the landed cost].
If the assessed GST is less than $50, you don't have to pay it, if the goods were
shipped via the postal service. If the goods are shipped through a customs agent,
you *will* have to pay GST, courier and Tradegate charges.

I have brought in quite a few things from the US/UK over the last two years
bought from stores and individuals. Each item was around $500-600 properly
declared as such and was sent either through the Postal service or
International Courier. I have never been asked to pay extra fees.
The only item that was ever treated oddly was a small ten dollar item I got
from the UK marked as a 'gift'. It passed straight through after being
opened and inspected.
If you are getting $2000 digital cameras from Stores in HongKong marked
'gift' you are going to get busted!! I am guessing that if the collectable
GST is less than $50 Customs usually don't bother with the paperwork unless
your name shows up on the radar very often.

Thanks John, I will check into that. At 200us its marginal, I had seen it
at $139 at Broadway which made it more attractive compared to here.

That is how they "sell". You will send your money, and get an inferior
substitute camera.
