I had malicious damage to my car that I informed the police about and spoke
with the insurance company about.
I asked what it would cost in policy increase in the following year and it
was $800. Plus the $500 excess. For $1300 I decided against it.
6 months later, Im on rating 1 with protection now, so I can make a claim
for just $500.
Will they repair my car for damage caused in a previous insurance period?

I dont think so, would you?!
Thats like smashing your car with no insurance and then calling the
insurance company to cover the damage if you paid the premium.

What a shame! You just spent a heap of money fixing the first lot of
malicious damage, and now, just last weekend, they came and did it again!
Bugger! Lucky you have good insurance rates now ;-)

Call the insurance company and ask them.

Think about what this means.
You've had a loss last year; then, after that loss occurs, you decide to
pay extra to take out rating one protection in case you have a claim.
Now you want them to pay out on a loss which had already occurred when
you decided to take out rating one protection, without affecting your
rating one!
Thats no different to taking out insurance after the loss and then
expecting them to pay up for something which had already happened before
you decided to take out insurance. Pretty clearly they're not going to
do this for you.

No, I didnt get protection, I was with them for 2 years which is what was
"required" to get that protection. Which I now have.
Sorry for not making myself clear. So what do you think?

I still think the insurance company will quite reasonably claim that the
policy applies as it stood at the time of the damage, not at the time of
the claim.
Look at it a different way, lets say you had an at fault crash with
someone the week before your insurance with company A expired, then
changed to insurance company B next week.
Three weeks after that you get the bill from the other party.
Which company would pay the claim?
Pretty obviously, company A pays, under the terms of the policy in place
at the time of the accident, not company B under the terms of the new
policy which came into effect after the accident but before the claim
was made. It's the date of the loss, not the date of the claim, which
determines which insurance contract applies.
Similarly, if you'd stayed with the same company but uprated your
insurance after the accident but before the claim, you couldn't expect
to claim under the new contract. Again, it's the date of the loss, not
the date of the claim, which determines which insurance contract applies.
Quite apart from anything else, if it was any different then insurance
companies would cancel policies of people who asked for claim forms, so
that by the time the claim was made, the policy is cancelled!

HOLEY HANNA ! $800 increase due to one claim that wasnt your fault ? you
have the wrong insurer.

No, they would have to correct the record.
You should go with an insurer that only reduced your no claim bonus 10%
per claim ..
so thats only $150 more on the premiums to make a claim.
You could try to move insurer, notifying them that you intend to claim about
the incident last year,
and then claim against the old insurer...

You could try it and hope they dont bother to raise your premiums this year.
doesnt stop them raising your premiums next year, and of course you can try
to
shop for a new insurer if its just the one claim you have to report -as it
wasnt even your fault
other insurers may give you the full no claim bonus even WITH that claim.
Report two at fault incidents and they quote you with 0% no claim bonus..

Talk to your insurer. NRMA advised me that I could claim up to 6 mths after
the malicious damage incident. In my case, the claim was made in a
subsequent insurance period. It had no effect on my premium - I think I
must have a life time NCB now. Good luck.
