Funny you mention that - on my 6230 (with Optus) sometimes the phone,
although on and waiting to receive calls, will not register and the
first I know of someone wanting to call is a voicemail SMS reminder.
Happens about twice a month or so, I thought it was Optus but could it
possibly be the software?

Happened to me on Three the other day, it was in reception and on standby,
did a test call to my phone and got voicemail O_O
