i have had a couple of memebers that were interested to know if my ps2slim that i chipped with a dms4lite was still functioning considering in the US reports were that 90% had laser burnouts after the install of a chip. there are varoius ways of possibly preventing a laser burnout but none of them are 100% confirmed. I originally didn't install a fix in mine because i was lazy and because there are rumours that the Aus delivered versions might be tuffer and less likely to burn out lasers. the answer people want to know, is my ps2 still functioning after well over a month.....
my ps2 laser burnt out yesturday, but it was caused by my own fault. i hadn't used it much in the last month because i was scared it would burnout the laser, i probably only used it for 3 hrs. I was waiting for a neo fix xii that i had ordered for the US to arrive after installing it yesturday i started getting read errors, so i romoved the neo fix, checked all my points and resoldered it, once again i got read errors so i decided to use larger wire but ti still didn't help. i'm not sure if you have been following th progress of the ps2slim fixes
best = Van Drunen fix
summ0ne fix- simple one resistor fix but is still under testing
matrix fix- PIC chip which powers off the ps2 when the laser is about to burn out
diode fix- limits current to laser and prevents laser burnout (there are now rumours that this fix is useless)
neo fix xii (combines matrix fix and diode fix)
i decided to remove the diode fix part of it and use only this because there were reports of read errors when using the diode fix, unfortunately in doing this i overheated a resistor the ps2 mainboard (i didn't realize at the time) and whern i powered it back up it burnt out one of the laser coils and now is only 2.9ohms when it should be 5ohms. i replaced the burnt out resistor today and put a new laser in from a new ps2slim and installed the summ0ne fix and now it works fine.
in summary i would only attempt a chip install in the new ps2slim unless you either use the magic/muppet chip which claims to be immune to laser burnouts or use the Van Drunen fix. all other fixes and unconfirmed and risky (thats my opinion)
