View Full Version : Orange bugging me - iSim better?
Graham
19-01-2005, 06:53 PM
I usually speak highly of Orange due to their cheap rates, however their
buggy network has been driving me nuts in the last few days again.
Apparently this is a known bug - when a phone on the Orange network
receives an SMS from a Nokia GSM phone (from any GSM network, I believe),
the SMS is received multiple times.
Today, I received an SMS at 10.07am, and the damn thing has been arriving
constantly for the rest of the day. It's arrived at least 30-40
times.
I've called Orange about this (and other faults) 3-4 times, and each time
I'm promised that a tech fault would be lodged and I would be called back
in a few days. Not once have I received a call back. One
monkey told me that it's a known issue that is a major problem and they
haven't generated a solution, but all the others simply say "We've had no
known faults with SMSs today".
So I'm thinking of switching. I make few calls but make a moderate amount
of SMSs. Orange's 11 cent SMSs are nice for this reason. For a low call
user (who would still like cheap rates) and a moderate SMSer, is iSim
still the best deal? I would need a new phone for this and I don't like
the three on their website, so I'd have to pay $300+ for a new Nokia
elsewhere? Guess I'd have to try flogging my Orange phone on eBay. :(
Thanks
Graham.

I get lots of SMS and don't have this problem. I'm sure that at least
some of it would be originated on Nokia mobile phones.

Thanks Charlie. I caught up with a friend of mine tonight who switched to
Orange recently, and he doesn't have this problem either. Which phone do
you have? I've got the Samsung with the colour screen. I rang customer
service again and the guy didn't believe it was an issue with my phone,
and he claimed they'd look into it yet again. I'd like to sort it
out rather than change carriers if I can.

iSIM works fine - Optus network so coverage is good.
You might have some start-up or teething problems beacuse customer 'service'
is very ordinary and is all done via email or online 'chat.' There's co CS
phone number. It took me several goes to get GPRS working.
Other than that, signup is done on the web and works smoothly. There's also
a good customer self-admin system on the web that works well. A log of all
calls is available on the web. I suspect it's a revamped version of the old
Dingo Blue software.
Note that Dingo Blue was develped by Optus and sold to AGL before being
re-acquired by Optus.
iSIM kind of sprung out of the old RSLCOM mobile - an Optus dealer that also
went broke and is now owned by Optus. iSIM hit the market after Optus took
control but don't expect the same standard of customer service as that
offered by Optus. iSIM has a separate office and is a low-overheads
operation.

I've used every handset released by Orange.
If you've chased it up so many times, just go to the TIO and save
yourself the time and heartache.
Call the TIO tomorrow, you'll get a ref number and then get straight
on to the customer relations people at Orange.

Was it reacquired by Optus? I don't think so, there was quite a spack
at the end from what I remember.

i believe ISIM and SIMPLUS are both brands/divisions of the Optus group

Optus took over the mobile division of RSLCOM after they got into finanacial
difficulties.
They later rebranded to ISIM & SIMPLUS when their rights to use the RSLCOM
mobile name expired.

So you've got same problem? Which phone have you got (just out of
curiosity)? They must have some settings wrong on their network, because
other customers don't have this issue at all!
Well after receiving my 10.07am SMS for about the 100th time at 10.30pm
last night (and no other SMSs all day), I decided to switch it off and on
again. I received about 7 SMSs that were sent during the day but hadn't
turned up until then. What do they expect us to do - turn our phones off
and on again every time we receive an SMS, just to stop duplicates and to
allow new SMSs?! What a joke!

Firstly, I may have exaggerated with the "we've ALL" had this problem....so
I apologise. But, yes, I have had the exact same problem. I receive anywhere
up to 20 repeats of the same message. I've complained numerous times and
have received answers from "no you don't' to "We've fixed that problem, sir.
just turn your phone off for a few seconds...then back on....and it will all
be fine"......LOL.... I STILL receive numerous repeat messages. Handset is
the pathetic LG6000.
I'm not very happy so far with Orange. Sure, the bills are really
cheap.....but as the old saying goes "you only get what you pay for...."
Also......don't believe the hype Charlie Wong spews forth. That guy is an
Orange groupie. I'm sure he's the CEO.

I just went to an Orange shop and the guy there said that the duplicate
SMS issue is a known problem with the Samsung phone (shame no-one at
customer service could tell me that), and gave me the number of Phonetec
in Nunawading. I rang them and they said they've had other Samsung
CDMA phones with the same issue and that it's usually fixed with a
software upgrade. Maybe it's worth ringing them about your LG phone.
Charlie has posted positive things about Orange, but I've also seen him
post less than positive comments occasionally.
