View Full Version : Channel 2 News goes widescreen

ABV2's Victorian news bulletins will go widescreen tonight. Hey - it
only took five years!
It will also have a new news theme based on the old radio news theme.
Does this mean all ABC-TV news is going widescreen nationally?
The Sunday morning "The Insiders" program from ABV2 has been widescreen
since its inception.

Yes. News, News Updates, Midday Report, 7.30 Report and Stateline, IIRC.
Although for today the changeover won't occur until the 6pm News update,
apparently.

Fan-bloody-tastic - the ABC has now adopted a watermark to join the new

The question is: will it remain beyond the News and 7.30 Report? I suspect
so, but I hope I'm wrong. If it does, make sure you give them a call and
tell them what you think.

it was announced last year that ABC would be introducing a watermark across
all programs from early 2005

I know. But not tonight, apparently.
And whether they announced it or not, if people don't complain then they'll
assume no-one cares. If enough people complain then maybe they'd reconsider.
Apathetic people deserve all they get, but I don't see why the rest of us
should suffer.
Anyway I'll wait til it becomes a permanent fixture. For a half hour news
bulletin I think I can cope.

and that's how the apathy starts

Personal care factor = 0.00000001
It's not that intrusive and you forget about it after a few moments.

i don't get too annoyed or distressed when they are there. At the end of
the day, it's only TV.

I'm told the permanent watermark is but days away. They'll be hearing from
me.

In a very short period we will have gone from 2/5 to 4/5 of networks having
them. Less than six months ago only Seven and Nine had them... then Ten
jumped on the bandwagon late in the year and now ABC. There are only five
networks.. do they really think we don't know what channel we're watching?
It's pure arrogance, and just plain annoying.

"new" news theme? I think you mean:
"It will also revert to an old news theme that has been used for its radio
news theme for at least 45 years."

it is supposed to resemble the traditional ABC news theme... but i can't
pick up any resemblance either

Watermarks or what the industry calls bugs are very important to news it instantly identifies footage as being from a network.
When a channel doesn't have footage they use other peoples footage, a bug lets people know who's footage it is. This happens quite a lot and its why hardly anybody steals 7 footage cause its got a massive ticker at the bottom

Nah. Plenty of operators overlay the bug with their own logo or whatever -
or crop the image then expand it a little.

Yep - when the BBC introduced 16:9 broadcasts on satellite and digital
terrestrial in the UK in 1998 (we didn't get BBC One News in 16:9 until
2000, but News 24 was 16:9 at launch of digital TV) we got the joys of 4:3
safe DOGs (Digital On-screen Graphic) - or watermarks - which said things
like "BBC ONE Scotland" or "BBC CHOICE N Ireland" top left. They were
HUGELY annoying.
The huge numbers of complaints made meant these were removed from BBC One
and Two (but not Choice which was digital only) within weeks.
Amazingly Channel Four over here also introduced a "4" DOG top left on their
digital outlets - and again were forced to remove it by the high number of
complaints.
Channel Five (which launched in analogue in 1997) had a DOG on both analogue
and digital until it re-branded as "five" recently and ditched the logo from
both platforms.
Currently none of the UK terrestrial analogue channels have DOGs - and
neither do their digital equivalents (with the exception of some news
programmes on ITV and BBC Two overnight)

Put the watermark only on the syndicated footage then, for chrissake.
Watching a "4:3 safe" watermark on a 16:9 broadcast, it's in the middle
of the frigging picture and very bloody obtrusive.
To whom to I complain? An email address of a real person, preferably.
Cheers, Robert.
