I have an LG RT-42PZ Plasma display connected to an LST4100P set top box
(which has the latest firmware version 6).

When watching SD programs it tends to have 5mm black bars up the side of the
display (which I could probably live with) although, as well as that the
actual picture has a 5mm bar of discolored picture up the right hand side of
it which makes it unwatchable unless I zoom the picture on the Plasma but 1
or 2 percent (which cuts this discoloration off). I have noteded it most
when watching things like the cricket and tennis as these are broadcast in
SD. I do not have the same problem when watching HD programs everything
looks OK.

I have tried connecting it via both RGB and DVI but have the same problem
with both types of connections.

Anyone had a similar problem? Know if you can fix it?

Take it back to point of purchase and buy a NEC PX-42XR3W. I had the same plasma and similar problems, now I have the best plasma for the same price!
