German tuner 9ff is claiming a new top-speed world record for
road-registered cars of a blistering 241.1mph. The record, set by 9ff boss
Jan Fatthauer in the company˘s new 9F-V400, was achieved at the Nardo
test track in Italy. It cracks the previous record of 240.1mph set by Andy
Wallace driving a McLaren F1 in 1998.

A bit dubious isn't it? When is a modified production car a standard
production car?
And yes, AFAIK, the F1 was standard.

when its the same specs as it was released from factory. pretty basic...
im sure a mclaren owner, should he feel the need, could whack in an almighty
supercharged thing into his car and beat 241mph. you know, as well as
reducing final drive, finding a 10kmh straight to do it on. without a
uniform standard of testing, these figures mean nothing.

Which factory though? making the claim(top speed) as they have means that
they believe that the car is their production vehicle, even if it was
actually built by Porche, at least that's how I see it. Put it this way,
if HSV produced a car that did 250mph, would it be ineligible for the
record? I don't think so.

Might be meaningless but It's a bit of fun and gives us something to argue
about:-)

if 9ff is an endorsed porsche dev house, then yeah, i would agree. if its a
sams performance, or ls1edit, then no.

Not that it's remotely close (I think it was around 171mph in it's best
ever 'std' guise) but the funniest thing about the lambourghina countach
in my opinion is that it went a full 10mph quicker without the wing on
the back, which was said to be purely aesthetic (i.e. it didn't
beneficially affect grip via added downforce, or perhaps just created
insufficient down force)

Yeah but what was the sticker price on a McLaren f1?
They might also do well to look at the Callaway (spelling?) pseudo
endorsed corvette. From memory it topped 400km/h (I think, it was some
time ago) which is 248. something mph

That's an old story about removing wings to gain top speed. F1 cars reduce wing force
to gain top speed, but lose in corner downforce, its all a game of compromise. you
can't have high downforce on a wing AND top speed.

what? the rear wing doesn't increase top speed? you're kidding!?
of course it's quicker without the wing on! whether the driver can
control the car at top speed is another question...

there's no right or wrong answer on that. for a long time the
commodore has been based heavily on the opel omega(?). does it qualify
as a production car?
a mclaren F1 is no more a production car than a Ruff or other tuned
Porsche. they are both largely hand-built. if anything the modified
porsche is much closer to a production car.

I realise that, but I'm speaking specifically about the countach, and
further about it's styling that it's design critera emphasised form over
function.

Didn't the first Vector (twin turbo 350 Chev) in the 80s get clocked at
247mph? I'm pretty sure it did. It was 250mph on paper, but when they
tested it "only" got 247mph.

But they're claiming "road registered record". Not production car
record.
