NSW Police:
Starting salary is approximately $ 45 000 in your first year as a probationary constable.
(Base salary plus shift penalty rates).

4 12hours on/12hours off days, then 4 days off i believe. 45k is still kinda
low for those walking the city streets.

and should you ever fire even a single bullet, expect to be in court for
several months rgardless of whether you were in the right. the cops who
actually put effort in really get reamed by everyone, the least they can do
is reward effort with better pay.

there's lots of jobs that don't pay enough. in fact ive rarely met
anyone who thinks they're overpaid.
i think cops should have their pay more performance-based. you meet
some cops who are obviously really dedicated and professional, while
others you think "you are taking my tax money".

No too bad I reckon. What else is about that'll pay that kind of money to learn for 12 months?
Remember - that's just "on the job learning" pay. You get to walk around with a real cop for
the first 12 months while you learn. The pay goes up then - and then again with promotions etc.

NO - you have to get into the Victorian police drug squad first.....
Each year salary increments occur. A NSW Senior Constable with five years service earns
approximately $56,735 pa, and sometimes more.
As I say - not too bad.

I'd want 45k/year too if I was in a job where there is a fair likelihood I'd
get shot at, very high likelihood i'm going to have to deal with abusive
violent people.
A mate of mine who is fairly senior in the force gets somewhere in the
vicinity of 75k. Some of the stories he has told me about when he has been
sent into scrub or houses after people who are known to be armed and have a
murder history - well lets just say I think he is underpaid. He has been
shot at a number of times (luckily never hit), has disarmed people armed
with guns/knives/syringes etc. I know what it's like to be at the pointy end
of a gun, while a crim is on the blunt end - be buggered if I'd want to deal
with that sort of thing for a living.

I earnt about that as a graduate engineer nearly a decade ago (in a remote
location mind you). Although I'd done 4 years of training, I reckon the
copper deserves more. Pay peanuts, get monkeys etc.

Job prospects if you leave the force are pretty poor.

Yeah, right.
I do just that without any reward whatsoever.
Don't mind it at all.

I think the degree of safety is determined by what LAC you work under...

But there are a lot more builders. And most building site accidents are due
to someone not taking sufficient care in regards to safety - ie accidents.
Pretty well all building site injuries are avoidable.
Police officers who are killed or injured it is because someone has
deliberately set out to kill or injure them.

I earn about that much. Let me see. I get to 'stretch the truth', take
people's money, tell people what to do... man! I must be a cop! I thought I
was a sales manager! LOL! Still, I'd want more than that to take the crap
cops take, like getting shot at, abused by almost everyone, hated by most
people they deal with........... I think I better double check my job
