View Full Version : Private sales bargain exists - I want to believe
Hello Folks,
I have been looking for a work car for quite sometimes, been hitching a hike
for around 2 months. Anyway, I saw an local Ad which advertised a Nissan
Pulsar 1997 for $5000. I called relatively early because on many occasions,
I got beaten by dealers because they called at very early time. So, I called
the bloke and arranged inspection time and repeatedly asked him to keep the
car available for me when I get there and he promised.
3 quarter of the way Woolloongabba - Brisbane QLD, he called me up and said
the car was sold. He said some guy came and bought the car for his daughter.
But I know that it is totally bullshit and I am 90 % sure that it was a
dealer whom may have offered more money for the car.
What really made me sad and pissed off is that we live in one of the most
civilised countries in the world and yet a bloke can broke his promise for
maybe a few hundred dollars more. I mean I totally understand if this
incidence happened in some third world countries where money means survival.
I also sure that the dealer will have the car at some yard or in a local Ad
for $3000- $4000 more next week.
When you think about it, The good old Private Car bargain is no longer
exist, the Personaltradingpost which costs you nearly $3 dollars and it is
filled with dealers whom asking ridiculous price on thrashed vehicles.
Car Dealers use all their "Cunning Tools" to grab all the Private Sale
bargains and leave "genuine car seekers" no choice but to go to them and get
ripped off on the very same car that they could have bought privately ( I
had never seen a decent carsale man - has anyone???)
Thanks for letting me whinning here. It's good to get it out of my chest

Go to an auction and beat the bastards at their own game. I would of done
the same thing if I was the guy. I'll take cold cash over someone who may
or may not buy the car any time. You have to be quick. As a friend of mine
says "He who hesitates, masturbates."

I've bought 5 vehicles in the last few years and none has been from a
dealer, all but one have been acceptably priced...

A selection of dealer experiences at various locations in NSW over 20
years or so...
Bought a 99 Outback Ltd last year for $20K changeover from a dealer
inlcuding an extended warranty that actually delivers.
In 97 got a 91 Liberty that we drove on trust with nothing paid for 5000km
because private finance was held up. Warranty started from payment date and
was honoured.
About 86 got a 77 Saab for a good price with a nearly six month warranty
because it was back in the workshop so often. No questions loaner car for
each downtime incident.
79 got a 73 Mini with neg kms as an almost straight swap for a very well
used Renault 12.
Above and beyond service under warranty.
So yes, there are some good yards and salesmen.
Some of the ones here are even still operating! You just have to do your
homework and avoid the screw them before they screw you mentality that so
many people seem to find necessary. Cheers

I brought a 83 Sigma 1600 from a yard planning to drop in my worked 2.6 from
my taxi-totalled Sigma. They had re-ringed it and put new bearings in the
bottom end, after a weeks driving a rumble started in the bottom end, they
had to machine the crank & replace the bearings, no problem, while it was
out I gave them an extra $300 to do the mains and cam belt. I gave that
motor hell, just itching to drop the 2.6 in sold the 2.6, 2 years later when
I got into 4x4's, after 7 years all up of $20 Midas oil changes, just tyres
& brakes, it finally started getting smokey, still on the same plugs &
points, so dropped mums old 2.0 into it and she drove it for another 2
years.
