During occasional poor digital reception e.g. with SBS, the set top box
makes very loud clicks when the picture falters. Is this normal with STB's?

Yep. Mine does to. Its just when it looses the signal it makes crack noises.
If its doing it all the time you may need to have a look at your aerial or
arial cable. I found some cables did it more than others.

I think this happens with any channel when there is a receivng glitch
of the digital signal.

Can happen, but using "quad shield" coax cable to the antenna can help.
Ensure the cabling is installed well away from electrical wiring as impulse
noise from electrical appliances (fridge, washing machine, hot water
cylinder, even light switches) can cause this as well.

Failing that you may need to install a better antenna. If it's just SBS
where you get the problem get a separate UHF antenna and link it in with
your existing one.
