Hi Guys,
I'm looking to pick up a 2nd hand family station wagon for my wife - budget
is $5000-$6500 - 4 cylinder, auto - I've basically come down to two choices,
Camry or Magna. (not the only choices, but they're the main ones)
Is there anything I should look for in either of these cars? Should I stay
away from anything?
What's good? What's bad?
Any warnings/thoughts/ideas welcome!
Regards,
Richard

Just been through this with a family friend with a lower budget.
We purchased a Camry wagon 90 model I think 4cyl Auto, power steer, air.
Spotless interior, paint good for its age, close to 150,000km for $2000
about 5 months rego.
Definitely go the toyota if your chasing resale value down the track. Else
some late model Mr Bish wagons have been going cheap just dont plan on
selling it :).
cheers
Scott

The Camry only came out with wagons for a few years, but considering your
budget that will not be a problem. The first wide-body Camry ran from '93 to
'97 and had a wagon. They are a proven car provided you make sure there is
*NO* black tar or sludge deposits in the oil-filler-neck of the engine. Its
a problem with the 4 and 6 cyl engines during the '90s that have *not had
proper oil-changes* and in severe cases can cause engine failure
unexpectedly. Apart from that they are a great car with many maintained
examples giving phenomonal mileages before any problems.
The Mitsy is well known for its poor Astron motor which was discontinued in
the early '90s. If you are looking at one, make sure the engine is not an
Astron II. (4cyl). You can get a reasonabley low mileage Magna ( with the
new 2.4L engine which replaced the Astron) for a good price,...but I 'm
still wary of them.

That's a bit of a 'no-brainer'.. The Camry!

Agreed.
Camry's are a very solid and reliable (albeit boring as batshit) car,
whereas Magna's in that price range are generally not all that great.
