Hi guys,
Having been fortunate to recently acquire a AE700 projector I am on the hunt
for a new dvd player to replace my 4 yr old Sony .The Pioneer 676 has been
recommended but I have heard it can be rather indifferent in sound quality
terms through 'quality' ancillaries.
The Samsung 747 high def player looks interesting , particularly for it's
upscaling feature , but again I have heard conflicting reports as regards
a/v quality.
Lastly , the local Retravision is selling off Philips dvdq50's at $167.The
machine looks great and plays all the formats I want however I have heard
that these machines are "great if you get a good one" but too many suffer
from a freezing problem.
I don't want to spend to much on a machine at this time as true hd dvd is
not to far off and dvd audio and sacd ,although of interest , are not of
prime importance at this point.
Any help would be gratefully appreciated .

My brother just bought an LG which plays everthing and has component out,
PAL/NTSC progressive scan etc.
I think he paid around $200 from Bing Lee.
Just curious, what price did you get the 700 for. I am in the market for
one.
When I get mine I am going to buy a Momitsu 880N, which seems to do
everthing and upscales to 720i (and p, I think) plus has a network
connection so you can stream from a PC if required. Around $600
Chris
$2700 is the going rate on the 700.
Everywhere.Youll need to ask them to do a price match.

You have a very good projector so why use it in combination with an
el-cheapo DVD player? You spent about 3 1/2 grand on the PJ so be prepared
to spend probably 1/2 that on a decent player.
If you're waiting for HD-DVD units to be released think about whether you
would have been happy to buy a first generation DVD player bugs and all?
You're better off waiting not only for the bugs to be ironed out but for the
major companies to agree to support a standard system.
You're looking at a minimum 5 years wait til then (not 5 months) and you're
better buying a decent unit now, especially if blue-ray comes out on top
which is not a backward compatible technology with your current DVDs.

I use a Pioneer 676a and also have a Denon DVD 1600.
The quality of picture on the Denon is excellent - and this seems to be a consensus view on some of the later models (2910 etc). The 1600 had some of the best video processing circuitry for players out around the time of its release. However - I find that the 1600 AND some of the newer Denon players are a bit fussy about playing 4.7Gb DVD's (and it seems to go beyond the media used). I now have about 10 discs that will not play in my 1600 and many of these will also not play in other higher models of Denon players. There is a difference in the video quality on the Pioneer - but it is only apparent on a good (large) display, and the viewer needs to be VERY fussy.
Also, the Denons don't support Divx - the major reason that many would be buying a Pioneer 676a.
Overall - If you are planning on watching DIVX movies, then the Pioneer is great (3yr warranty, reasonable to good DVD video, adequate CD sound, so far, plays everything I have tested, only $200 AUD). There is no doubt that dedicated CD players (eg rotel) play much better CD sound - but this is not that important to me. Remember, 'downloaded' DIVX movies tend to have compression loss of the video signal compared to the DVD (depends on the file size, etc etc) so if you intend to watch these files then you will have to put up with loss of visual quality.
Have a look at the hometheatre forum on DBA - there are quite a few reviews of Denon players.(link) (http://www.dtvforum.info/index.php?showforum=7). Also the Momitsu.

I've been having trouble with my Denon 2800 and DVD-Rs. TDK seems to be better
than the alleged Verbatim's I had.
The main reason I bought the Denon (10 months old for $800) was its progressive
scan capability. Pity I didn't realise my new plasma TV was an interlaced one.
I'm still extremely happy with the picture quality though.

I think since you have the 700 projector you might as well use the HDMI feature hence i think you better off spend a bit more and buy a dvd player with HDMI. I think DENON 3910 is an excellent dvd player. I have one myself. Before I bought it I had a comparasion with Pioneer 969 and found that the 3910's image quality is better than the 969. The cable you should use should not exceed 1m. I am currently using a monster HDMI cable (1m).
Although there are talks about HD dvd and Blue ray dvd but its not going to happen for quite some time due to the debate they are having at the moment about whether to produce HD dvd or Blue ray dvd.
