I sent an e-mail to Infocus customer service in the US asking whether they did have an international warranty, after reading a few comments about it on various forums. This is the reply I got:

Thanks for your interest in InFocus products and warranties. We do offer a global warranty. If you export a product you would just need to pay the standard customs and duties fees for the particular country that you import it to. This would keep the original manufacturer’s warranty intact.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Pretty good news, so I'm thinking about getting an INFOCUS 4805. From what I know my estimate of the cost would be:

Projector: $1000 US on eBay = $1300
Shipping: approx $150 (just a guess)
GST: $145
Customs handling (or whatever it is called): $50
Customs broker to handle paperwork: hopefully no more than $100

As far as I can tell there is no duty, but the tariffs databases are so obscure that I quite easily could have missed a section covering projectors.

So roughly $1750 to get it here... Then I would just need an adapter plug so it fits Australian power points. Is there something I'm missing here because it definitely sounds like the way to go...?

I have the 4805 and its fantastic OTB, think you'll pay a lot less than your figures. I bought mine here though 5 months ago.

Yep, I think you have over-estimated your costs Howzat. Got any friends
travelling to US? I am going in 5 weeks. I will check the prices out on the
ground.

That's pretty much the same reply I got when I bought mine a year and
a bit ago. They said as long as any customs and import fees were
paid, the warranty would be honoured without question.

Peter, still awestruck by the picture from the X1 for the cost.

Where do you guys think I overestimated prices?
Hopefully the broker would be cheaper, but I think shipping might be closer to $200... Would like to hear what your estimates are?
Glad to hear you're happy with yours gumshoe, I was concerned about the lower resolution of the 4805, but sounds like DVDs will still look great. I'm in regional Tassie so I don't think I'll need to worry about HD TV for a long while...
What's the best price for these projectors in Australia these days?

Howzat,
I bought a cheap SD STB and all I can say is that when the TV stations broadcast digital TV the picture in my regional area its simply awesome from the 4805 - clear and very sharp, its like being there and more so with sport.

Think you can get the 4805 for $2750 if you shop around.

It seems many of the Panny AE700 owners are having all sorts of problems.

Perhaps there's a business oppportunity here for someone who's interested to provide a service to facilitate the buying of AV gear from o/seas. THey would need to establish:

* Existence of international warranty for each brand + all revevant terms
* Best priced sources
* Freight agreements (some bulk purchases may be available)
* Insurance
* Other duties & import requirements
* Advice on & sources for replacement power supplies.

This could be provide as a Cost + modest markup - all visible. I think people would be prepared to pay at least $100-$200 on top of cost providing there was some comfort over warranty.

If you read the US package content it says the units come with both 110 and 240 cords. The units are also capable of taking 110 to 240v

My AE700 has been great, no problems here. (Knock wood ;-))

I was actually looking into what it takes to become a customs broker, to do something similar to what you suggest. Except no institutions in Tasmania run the course, only some TAFE's on the mainland from what I can gather. It's one-year full-time I think.
I checked with my local customs broker and they wanted $250 to handle paperwork to import the projector, which is ridiculous considering the small amount of time involved. I could probably do it myself with a little bit of help from Customs...
