I saw a TEAC HD plasma for $4000 today - sorry, I have forgotten the name of
the shop, but it's the electrics shop behind Harvey Norman at Highpoint in
Melbourne. I think it must be the PLMHD1065.
This seems a good price for a 106 cm hd plasma but I can't find any reviews
on it, in fact a Google on the model number turns up very little at all.
Until the end of Feb it comes with a 5 yr warranty.
It looked much the same as all the other plasmas in the shop, but they were
all being fed with a composite signal and none of them looked spectacular.
Can anyone offer any personal experience with this model, or point me to any
info online?
Thanks in advance for any info.
With the brand name of TEAC do you really need to ask? Everything TEAC is a
pile of shit.

yeah i was also lookiing at thsi when it came out, but having looked at it
several times, the image is quite off colour..verging on a yellow green. The
SSD version had the same thing. They certainly dont have the quality of
other panels.

Very constructive. Very helpful.

Beware of people who make absolute statements - they usually turn out to be
idots.
Example: DV-50s http://www.teac.com/esoteric/NewEsoteric/DV-50S.html (not
that I have one).

Thanks to you and Justin, Wayne.
I have seen similar responses in some of the digital camera forums, in which
people form fanatical attachments/aversions to particular brands of camera,
to the point of inviting each other to meet for a fist fight. Extremely
strange.
I'm surprised no-one has been able to offer any first hand opinions of this
plasma though - I'm sure it isn't as good as a top end brand such as
Panasonic, but someone must be buying them. The price is certainly
attractive.
Well it's the truth... Name one good TEAC product?

The Reel to Reel tape recorders they made in the '70s :-). I also have 2
video recorders that work flawlessly.

My DVB400 STB is a great unit. Teac have made many turntables & reel to reel
recorders in the past that are recognised as classics. Their CD & DVD
burners are pretty good too. The SRL50 clock radio is supposed to be very
nice. So are their minidisc recorders. You didn't limit the options to
digital audio visual.
No one's saying that they target the quality market (at least these days) -
they produce a product at a price point. If you want a 42 inch plasma & only
want to pay $3500, then your options are limited. Personally, I wouldn't buy
a screen that doesn't even meet the minimum resolution for the SD standard
of this country (none of the sub $6000 screens do), but then, there are a
lot of people who would. CHEAP 42 INCH PLASMAS AREN'T HIGH DEFINITION!!!!
When I worked in the hifi industry (in the late 90's) we'd often open up
similar products & discover identical components inside. One would be
selling for twice the price of the other (laser disc players were all made
by Pioneer, but they weren't the only brand on the market). You'd demo both
to the customer & they'd rave on about how much better the expensive brand
was. It was all brand association. Moral of the story? Investigate where the
plasma or LCD you're about to buy is actually made. You may be shocked to
find that it comes from the same OEM as half a dozen other brands. Shock
horror - maybe even Teac. If you're going to pay a premium for a premium
brand, check if they actually manufacture their screen (e.g. Sharp make
their own LCD's, but not plasmas). Have a look at
http://www.plasma.com/classroom/whomakesplasma.htm it makes for interesting
reading.
Having said all that, I agree the Teac 42 inch isn't the best on the market.
But at $3500, buy it, pop the badge off & replace it with a Sony badge &
impress your mates (personally, I put the Sony brand in the same class as
Teac, it's just over priced).
