Why bother with silly old 57's and the consequent expense & heartache;
not to mention the headaches that comes from having to wear a head
brace to keep the soundstage intact? If I was hankering for a panel
speaker, which I'm not, I'd go for a pair of 2nd hand Maggnaplannars or
if feeling rich a pair of Ambience Reference 1600's. Both of which
leave 57's & the newer Quads with their pants around their fragile
ankles.
I had a very bad experience with Mr Halls 'mods' to a pair of 67's and
a friend was driven insane with his endless mucking around with his
57's. Others swear he's the best.

Easily solved Pat. Stack Quad 57's in pairs & have you and your guest
sit on the 2nd and 5th rung of a ladder placed just so.

Gee, I ain't so sure about the maggies. I did an AB test here a few year
back with an
an inferior-to-what-I-got-now set of speakers, and mine killed the maggies.
I dunno about Ambience. A cheap sh pair is out of range....
I'd like a lotta things, maybe Martin Logans, Acustats, Quad 63, 989, etc,
but
perhaps I'll go to the grave without them.
Meanwhile, the SEAS drivers in the boxes I made seem to do OK,
and not too many ppl have any complaints.
I sometimes think if I abandoned cost concerns and used
4 woofers, 4 midranges, and 4 tweeters in columns, it might sound somewhat
better,
since the drivers would only have to produce 1/4 of the power each
that they do now.
If a ribbon sounds good at 2 metres long, why not a column of small dynamic
drivers?

Yes, but its not as if there are 20 different service agents just down the
road.
There simply are not a great number of ppl with any idea of how to go about
fixing ancient ESLs.
WTF am I to advise my client who just wants his speaker fixed?
Anyway, I will see what happens.....
Ppl shouldn't worry about expense attatched to their hobby.
It appalls me to see blokes whinging about the cost of a speaker or amp,
or new tubes, when they arrive at my door in a car worth $50,000.
But I remain silent about how they value things and spend their dollars,
but I do see such gross inconsistencies.....
Which do you spend on, is it a vehicle to make one feel big and proud, and
thus maintain an image, or is it on what you love, presumably your wife if
you have one,
or your music which supports your soul?
Frankly, I try to spend SFA on my car, a 1986 Laser.
The car is merely a link to my pals, and means to get to cultural
happenings.
Its not bad for shopping either, but I stay clear of David Jones.
The roads are so fabulous in the ACT I don't need any more.
I see ppl with huge 4wd, and I smile.....

That makes it very awkward to make love whilst listening to music
with Kylie and Nicole perched up
at 3 and 5 feet above the deck.
Bloomin dangerous at my time of life.
Then there are all the arguments about who gets the top seat.
The one on the bottom complains about having to fetch the drinks.....
Anyway, most sheilas have such better hearing than us men that they make
do
with appalling sound gear, so when they hear a bit of good sound here they
don't need the extremes you mention.
One didn't like the look of my speakers when she met them for the first
time.
(Heck, they all hate the look of large speakers.)
But this one liked country and western. Hard to take it was, but she was
good at other things...
Anyway, she put on some Garth Brookes, and she melted; sooooo much better
than her 1976
Pioneer system she had gotten used to.
Garth sounded positively sexy on my gear. Its why he is so successful.
John Williamson couldn't sing a love song if his life depended on it.
But when he sings about Our Don, he'd make you weep.....
The better systems yank the heart strings;
If somebody has a gift, it more likely is heard....

Hi,
Price has been reduced to $3000, and Cope transport informs me that shipping
to most parts of Australia is around $150... and they'll pack it properly
etc.
Sincerely,
Mal
