576i vs 480p - should there be a difference?

Hi guys,
I've just set up my hitachi pj100 pj on a 90 inch screen. I'm projecting an image from a Pioneer 676 dvd player - the sacd/dvd audio model. I've tried both interlaced at 576i and progressive at 480p signals and I must admit I can't tell the difference. I'm using component input and the deinterlacer on the projector is turned off.
Should there be much difference between the two outputs?

Theoretically yes, but of course if you do not see much of a difference it
means that:
1. The 'interlaced' output from the Pioneer 676 is very good
2. The video scaler inside the Hitachi is also very good.

I've also got an Hitachi PJ (the TX10, excellent machine) and have noticed
more saturated colour and less 'ringing' (especially around small text)
using the progressive output from my DVD player. I would just use whichever
output you prefer.
