View Full Version : MPEG Wizard Womble

For no apparent reason when I load in a large mpg file, MPEG Wizard Womble
Multimedia software only seems to recognise and load into the time line the
first 24 minutes even though the file is a full length movie of 1.5
hours.Previously this was not the case, no new software, high levels of
security, firewalls etc etc.
The file size is correct and it will play completely in Window Media Classic
etc.
The strangest thing is I can see the end of the file in the preview monitor
but not when I get into the timeline. I discovered
this when I was trying to top and tail the file (remove the studio intro and
next weeks promo at the end). So far my only work around is to convert the
mpg file to DVD format (vob files) and load these back into Womble to carry
out the edits I want to do..
I have uninstalled and reinstalled Womble. I even went back to a restore
point 1 month ago. The mpg file derives from a Divco HDTV tuner card tuned
to a standard definition station in Sydney Australia
Operating system XP SP2
3 gig processor
1.5 gig memory (Corsair 400)
C drive 120gig SATA
D drive 160gig SATA
Any thoughts?

No thoughts on that particular problem, but I would bring to your attention
that Womble has caused me a lot of grief when editing mpeg 2 files. The
problem is audio sync, or more precisely, the lack of it. Try as I might, I
can never get a decent result out of this programme. If you add that
frustration to the inelegant and non-intuitive method of controlling the
various aspects and functions of this programme this does not look like
money well spent.
Get hold of a copy of VideoRedo. This will show you how easy it is to edit
and join mpeg 2 files and to finish with the audio in perfect sync. I found
an older version to try out ( Ver. 1. 6. 0. 243) and I was truly impressed
the way this simple software worked and quickly produced a perfect result
every time.
No affiliation of any kind with the VideRedo company, and no axe to grind
with Womble. Just telling it as I see it.

Many thanks I will give it a go. I haven't had any sync problems with
Womble! So maybe it's something else in my setup that is affecting file
length into the timeline and something in your set up that is affecting
sync? Bill Gates is a good whipping boy to blame - it's his fault!!!!

After furkeling with the various versions of Tmpgenc editors and Womble,
VideoRedo was a breath of fresh air. I actually started counting how many
minutes in total to top and tail and remove ads. My results were in minutes
rather than tens of minutes.
>Bill Gates is a good whipping boy to blame - it's his fault!!!!< Quite
probably. But he has a good excuse. If you re-arrange the letters in his
name you get "glib tales"

To NETMASK contact womble support by e-mail. They are renowned for their
willingness to help.
To "Justme" ....Womble (and other video editing programs of various
persuasions ) are renowned for out of sync problems when confronted with
lack of resources.
Womble is resource hungry. VideoRedo is not.
I actually purchased Womble Mpeg Video Wizard (approx $150) and; for me its
the program that is used the most on my computer with NO out of sync
problems. Its the best thing since sliced bread.
Hope this helps.

Yep I think the problem is with the way SBS TV encoded this program. I have
since run the file (3gigs) into Sony DVD Architect and the same thing -
recognises it as only 24 minutes long yet I can play the full file in WMP
with no problem. I have plenty of resources and I'm thinking maybe there is
a codec selection or problem associated with Womble? I can load a huge 8 gig
transport file into it with no problems. I haven't experienced any audio
sync problems or re-encoding for that matter. The way I got around this so
that I could make a DivX file was I converted the 3gig mpg file into a set
of vob files using "SO- Divx to DVD" which actually converts just about
anything to DVD files. I then laid in the individual vob files into Womble -
did my edits and saved it as a mpg file (6000 vbr) Voila put in into AutoGK
and 1.5 hours latter a 700meg avi file. Plays perfectly on my Zensonic

Thanks for the info.
Resources are adequate here. Athlon 2600, 1 Gig ram. I have struggled with
Womble for so long now, I have really gone off the programme completely. My
needs are simple and more than adequately covered by VideoRedo. I can see no
advantage in revisiting a sink-hole full of wasted hours.
>Its the best thing since sliced bread<
Not to me. Just crumbs turned into the dust of wasted effort.
Cheers.

I helped my son when he encountered out of sync problems with womble and it
was fixed by purchasing a faster hard drive AND optimizing this hard drive
regularly.
On this computer it seemed that womble had problems when the hard drive is
"thrashing" trying to find the information on the hard drive.
We got it to the stage where the hard drive was "quiet" when patching
together all the cut sections and no more out of sync.
Also it pays to have nothing else running when using Womble as this
(obviously) uses resources that womble needs.
Hope this helps somebody.

Thanks again.
I also went down this path with a 200 gig 7200 rpm drive as master on its
own ide port. Defragmentation was a religion. The advice about nothing else
running, worked to some extent on occasions, but seems to defeat the whole
idea of having a gutsy box and Windows XP with the capability to multi-task.
It would seem to indicate that this software is not really ready to share
resources in a reliable manner.
The charm of VideoRedo is that it really needs none of these extra efforts
to produce a 100% spot on output. I am prepared to believe that there is
something obvious I missed with Womble. Whatever it is/was, I am no longer
interested in using the software. I usually keep an eye on these technical
problems that represent something extra in the way of a challenge. I
certainly want to find out if there was something I missed, and the nature
of the solution, but it will not get me back to that software. It has
already eaten up all the time I am prepared to give.
Cheers.

Out of curiosity, what type of tuner card are you using?
I've been using Mpeg Video Wizard for a long time now with the broadcast
mpeg program stream output from the Nebula tuner card and I haven't had
any audio sync problems other than a few rare occasions when the Nebula
software corrupted the data in the first PTS header.
I can't understand why people do crazy things like demultiplexing the
program stream output and re-multiplexing to fix audio sync problems.
Womble does screw up the total video length if the data in the first PTS
header is corrupted. The software seems to look only at the first PTS
header when importing files and setting the total length details in the
input window. If it is corrupted then using PTS header patching software
can help or using MVW to output a duplicate version of the file from
the first 'I' frame to the end of the file.
In any case, since learning how to use all the editing and mpeg file
tools of MVW I haven't wanted to use anything else.

I am using the DNTV Live! card and the software is set to produce an mpeg2
stream.

I don't do this.

Lost me here. I am guessing "PTS header patching" is what VideoRedo is
calling "QuickStream Fix".
It seems possible that you may have pointed to an answer of sorts.
In the next day or so I shall run a file through "QuickStream Fix" and then
do a top/tail edit with Womble. If it is in sync after that, then my
suspicions about Womble and its inadequacies will be confirmed.
Cheers.

Hello again,
I actually meant to say an hour or two for the test edit.
So here is the way it went.
Top/tailed 30 min file "A" through Womble. Resultant file "A (2)"
Played badly out of sync. Unwatchable.
Used VideoRedo for a Quickstream Fix of the same 30 min file "A".
Used Womble to top/tail resultant file "A (3)".
Played perfectly in sync.
Conclusion. Strong possibility my card/software combination produces a file
that may be deficient in the early PTS headers.
Womble/TmpGenc fails to recognise/correct this situation.
Feel free to point me in the right direction if I have missed something
here.
Cheers.

Well I have had a try of VideoRedo and it certainly works but I don't care
for the interface. As far as Womble I haven't had any problems with it with
the exception of 2 files recorded from SBS TV in Sydney and that was a
failure to load in the true length of the file into the timeline. I have
conducted a number of experiments with these 2 files using a range of
programs that all managed to correct the problem. I first ran it into VSO
DivX to DVD (really this should be called "Most Video files TO DVD") I then
loaded in the resulting 3 vob files, did a top an tail and all was well. I
also used Canopus to convert the mpg transport stream to a mpg program file
then loaded it into Womble - also a solution. My guess is that either the
transmission was odd in someway or my hard disk was causing a problem - it
was very badly fragmented, I don't normally let that happen, naughty me... A
curious thing about the mpg file direct off air was I copied it onto a DVD
rewritable as a data disc, popped it into my Zensonic DVD player and without
thinking I started to press the next chapter button as if it was a real DVD
and guess what the Zensonic went to a reasonable next chapter - in fact
there were 17 in all. This shouldn't happen. I used Nerovison express to
make a real dvd and used the create chapters routine - guess what it came up
with the same 17 points. Anyway I think I will go away and play my cello for
a couple of days to forget about this mystery!!! Then back to work on a real
computer (Mac) with FinalCutPro.

Interesting results there on a few things. I shall join you in cogitation,
and meanwhile listen to the cello in my head.
When I was a snot nosed brat, my slightly elder sister was in the habit of
taking over the front parlour for her violin practice. Usually her friend
came, lugging a cello, and a gawd-awful noise resulted. I was always quite
glad to see her friend "Jacky" lugging away this evil box that, to my ear,
generated moose noises.
I suppose I was in my 30's when I realized that "Jacky" and the very
talented cellist Jacqueline du Pré were in fact the same person. To my
everlasting shame, it still sounded like a love-sick moose.
Cheers.
