If it is, they get less uptake, thus get less of their $600 back.
Economics 101.
We each make our own decision on accepting.
Some pay at any price, some will never pay and some wait.

why not just buy a $299 dvd recorder?

Well the main thing really is it can't change foxtel channels for you ..
Thats probably the single useful feature this offers that no other recorder,
for foxtel "Digital" offers .. the ability to tune channels ..

Suggestion....don't ever buy a $299 DVD recorder.
Until/unless things change and prices drop - more trouble than they are
worth.
Some might have good experiences but the odds are not in your favour.

Is that really worth the price they'll be asking for it? I'm still on the
old satellite system. I refuse to convert to DIGITAL because the only
benefit for me is to be able change channels automatically but I'm not
prepared to pay a huge price for something that I won't own. I'd rather by
my own DVD/HD recorder and chnage channels automatically. Hang on, doesn't
the standard DIGITAL STU do that anyway?

You will soon have no choice. You will either accept the upgrade or
you cancel your service.
Judging by your enthusiasm for Subsription Television, I tend to think
you will be doing the former 8-)

I think the enthusiasm is often more for telling everyone how "clever" he is, and therefore how wrong they are, about subscription television .... and the internet .... and the law .... and english .... and logic .... and .... take your pick.
A legend in his own eyes.

What do you call those two, stupid?
Foxtel are required to continue to offer an 'analog' service to current
subscribers for a period set in the CSA

What I dont get is why they dont move all sattelite subscribers to the
so-called "digital" package (i.e. the streams with NDS encryption) and drop
the Irdrto2 only streams from the sattelite all together.
Probobly because that would require giving all customers new boxes and
smartcards...

Only if their under contract still .. If they've finsihed theyr 12-24 month
contract, then that window is up .. How long HAS "Digital" been around for
now?

How much WILL they be charging for it? You have no idea .. your only
guessing .. and quite likely, yes, it could well be worth it ..
