Saw an Acoustic Research 30" LCD at Strathfield and the picture quality was
an absolute piece of shit.

Strathfield would have done their utmost to supply the monitor with a decent
signal? Don't fucking think so!

Yeah exactly - I admit it's probably older tech with a slow response time,
but whack a DVD on (not using composite connection if possible) and it
should still look pretty good.

They actually do look not too bad if you put a decent signal into them.
Strathfield are using cheap chinese DVD players and some of these "out
of
copyright" multi movie low bitrate DVD's to demo them and they really
do look awful with them.
After badgering them and bringing in my own DVDs and looking at a FTA
digital live picture from Sydney stations they do look quite good.
My choice was however a 17 inch Philips HD capable LCD for $650 with
Composite, component, tuner for analogue FTA off air, VGA, and 1080i
HD inputs. Quite low lag and good contrast and colorimetry.
The Hy Def set-top HD box works well and is definitely good value.
