The only thing the same with the original Acoustic Research. is the name,
The fact are these are Chinese clones of the original Acoustic Research. I
have a Acoustic Research Turntable, which is of very good quality.
And you are correct Chinese Sansui are no-where near the quality of the
japanese stuff on the 80's, But reading the blurb on the box , you would
never know. They claim all sorts of wonderfull output capasaty's. I suspect
the terrestial set top box's are the same, Cheap and nasty in there
manifacture, but unfortunatly not cheap in price, just nasty. Easest way is
to pick the thing up, What does it weigh, Propably has a Power supply the
size of a match box. and relighability the same as a match. Starts bright
and alive, but soon dies out.

I too have some genuine Acoustics Research high end gear (I believe all the
genuine gear was Canadian made). They made some high end stuff, but have
however gone out of business a year or 2 ago. I am suspecting the name has
been bought or just used by a dodgy chinese or taiwanese manufacturer to
push their crappy products and trick a few people into thinking its a real
deal...

Acoustic Research made some great speakers in the USA from the 1950s - 1980s
and a great budget turntable in the 1970s but since then nothing with the AR
logo on it could possibly be mistaken for high-end audio.

Well if they are anything like Sansui, they would have sold the branding and
company to an Asian manufacturer, much like Sony, JVC and Matsushita bought
the US film studios.
I think the new Sansui is actually owned by a South Korean or Japanese
company and they have their stuff (as so much is these days) manufactured
where it's cheapest labour - usually Malaysia, Sth Korea or China/Tiawan.

I remember the the "AR Sound" - used to be termed "bold American" by the
Hi-Fi shops I used to go and listen to them in.
I haven't seen the brand around for years and just presumed they went the
way so many other great Hi-Fi brands have of late.

They were a beautiful speaker - still remember how good those little AR7s
sounded with 100w? RMS fed into them. Are they still in business?
