If for years you have been use to simply pressing a record button
on a TV recording machine like a VCR or dvd recorder to record
a TV show then you won't enjoy the lengthy & tiresome chore
it is to record a digital TV show from your hard disk to a dvd !

I am just getting started on this PC digital TV card thing
and it is akin to going to school again to learn so much
to do so little like just ! record !

Yes, it is real simple just recording to the computer's hard disk.
It is copying it to a dvd that is the most frustrating
@%##$#$ thing you will attempt if you are use to
just pressing record / burn.

There is too much reading to do, too much software to try,
up to twice or more as long as the TV program went for
processing / transcoding time, faults in the recordings that ruin
it, etc !

Now, I would recommend a standalone STB connected to a
hard disk dvd recorder always above a PC digital TV dvd recorder !
With a standalone dvd recorder like the Panasonic or Pioneer you can burn
your TV program from my understanding from the hard disk to a dvd
(I think) up to 8x speed with just a push or 2 of a button.

Currently PC TV dvd recording is a time waster !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Somebody invent the one step Record Now 8x & more, Period ! software ?

Initial test views (PC TV out ) of it look inferior to using a
digital set top box / and recording it using a standalone dvd recorder.

PC digital TV card is Vision Plus terrestrial tuner.
I'll just use it now to see what is on while computing and
rush to *PVR if something worth recording is on if I didn't know about
beforehand via Green Guide - have you noticed how many
TV shows aren't listed as widescreen when they should be !
This is a must when using a 4:3 TV ( has 16:9 widemode too)
but can be solved by using a PVR where the original signal
is recorded and you can chose after recording it to see it in
its suitable aspect ratio - 4:3 fullscreen or letterbox, or
16:9 widescreen and record it to dvd with dvd recorder
that way too.

*(this crap PC digital chore has urged me to buy one,
maybe Wintal)

Its like anything the more you do it; the easier it gets.
I have both a standalone dvd recorder with hard dove, and a digital tv card
in my pc.
Its NOT a big deal to process a show to dvd from your pc.
For me it takes about 3 minutes to remove ads from the mpeg and then about
another 3 to author and burn.
I use wombles mpeg video wizard for ads and dvdlab pro for authoring and
burning.
I use the pc card process because the dvd recorder cant RECORD in widescreen
and I have 4:3 & 16:9 tvs in my house
Your statement that picture quality is inferior is simply not true, as its a
straight DIGITAL copy. Its exactly as broadcast no degradation at all.

Hope this helps

What about the transcoding time ?
Don't you have to transcode it from digital TV DVB Mpeg to
DVD player readable MPEG ?
This takes ages; like the same time the show runs for or more.

Another thing, how come the latest in computer technology
the dual layer burner like the Lite-On and using Nero software
takes 17 mins !!! to erase a single layer -RW dvd disc
whereas my standalone Sony dvd recorder takes only about 1 minute
or less ?

About the picture quality - it is still early days and I have not yet
managed to relax and see a digital TV signal copied to dvd and played
in my standalone dvd player and the TV out viewing was initial setting up
of graphic card's output.

Only had new computer for 1 week.

Here is what is involved in digital TV PC dvd recording ;

Not unless it's HD. SD is the same as DVD. I use "ProjectX" to demux the
video (Cuttermaran if I want to remove ads etc) and "TMPG DVD Author" (or
"IfoEdit" which is free) to burn it to DVD. Nothing needs to transcoded.
Easy.

I would suggest you investigate the Topfield Set top box and hd recorder
built in http://tonyspage.abock.de/. Available from Dick Smith at Eastlakes.

You can watch one program whilst you record another etc. You can freeze live
TV, make a cup of coffee come back and resume watching the News without
missing a beat - you catch up to real time by fast forwarding through the
commercials. Easy to operate - I am 67 and have had no difficulty.

Located next to your TV is becomes your STB and "new vhs recorder/player"
rolled into one. It has a whole lot of additional features. It can record 60
hours of TV (120gig drive).

If you really want to make a DVD or DivX copy on disc for posterity it has a
USB output to your computer. You can use programs like Womble, VideoRedo,
Project X etc to top and tail and cut commercials out. No transcoding and
reasonable quick. Womble spits out a mpg file that you can either make a
DivX file of 700meg to fit on a CDR - perceived quality somewhere between
VHS and DVD, note the word perceived (what you see in normal viewing). Go to
AutoGK page for more details http://www.autogk.net/ (free program) Your
computer should be able to play DivX files in Windows Media player you will
need a DVD enable DivX standalone player like the Zensonic (au$145 approx)
if you want to play them sans computer. Otherwise make a DVD.

No transcoding required.
Just author the mpeg.
