I'd gently remind the little woman in question of the time you really made
an effort when it really mattered (like on an Anniversary or something -
assuming you did).

It's taken me a few years but my partner doesn't get anything for
Valentine's (she buys me something - I say thanks and move on) but I ALWAYS
observe the anniversary of when we first met and I remind her of it at the
time.

I don't know that they "invented" the commercial aspect... they may have
seen a commercial opportunity and so exploited it for all it was worth. Good
luck to 'em. Same goes for Xmas. Easter on the hand, now that's overhyped
Australian CRAP. You don't see anywhere near the same amount of chocolate
eggs and novelties in American stores. (I say hypocritically having just
polished off my first chocolate bunny for the season - a Valentine's gift
from the Mrs.)
