View Full Version : Kaon KTF200S - zoom function & white dots

Hi all,
Has anyone else tried to use the zoom function on the Kaon KTF-200S?
I use it for expanding out the half-screen video datacasting on
digital-44. However, I cannot get the 'plus' option to work, which
expands the zoom area. I am just curious whether this is a bug or
just a quirk with my unit.
Also, I get white dots directly underneath the widescreen picture when
in '4:3 letterbox' mode on TEN only. Is this a problem with the
signal that 10 is sending, or is it the stb?
Lastly, does anyone know what the 'TV/STB' button is meant to be all
about?
Thanks,
jojax14

It's Ten's fault, and they really, REALLY need to do something about it.
The vast percentage of digital viewers are still using 4:3 displays, after
all.
This "white dot" annoyance is displayed by every STB I've laid eyes on,
with the exception of the original Thomson and the $1000+ Topfield PVR.

Its TEN's fault.

Maybe your STB remote could double for your TV remote after choosing the
right brand.

Ten, but some STBs mask a few lines top and bottom when in letterbox mode to
try and eliminate some of the junk that creeps into the top and bottom few
576 lines of the original MPEG image (before letterboxing conversion).

TV/STB is for when you use SCART, it basically tells your scart TV "don't
bother reading the signal from me now" while still remaining powered up, so
the TV will choose the last tuned RF channel rather than the auto-selected
AV channel. If your box is dual scart, it may also be used to trigger the
scart passthrough function (so you can feed svid/comp/RGB via the "VCR"
scart connector to one single connection to your tv, basically you can
"daisy chain" scart devices this way to some extent).

Talk about TEN's fault... right now I am getting exactly NO picture &
sound for 10 (sydney, from the Artarmon tower).
Signal strength 77%, quality 0%, with the occasional burst up to 30%
(normally it sits on 95%+). Analogue 10 also looks quite fuzzy
tonight.
Is this a Sydney-wide thing or just local interference?
Jojax14.
PS: thanks for all the replies.

Doesn't happen on my 1st Gen Thomson, as you state, but it also doesn't
happen on my Strong 5930 either ;)

Nice to see that Strong tackled the problem in their later boxes, then;
they never bothered fixing the many problems in the 5200/5290, though,
which is enough to make me swear off Strong products for life... a pity,
too, as the picture quality was the best I've seen from a set top box. But
I digress... :)

I really like my Strong. I was afraid I'd made a mistake when i bought it
given the reputation they had from their earlier boxes, but I updated the
firmware, and while there are some things such as the japenglish instruction
manual, some un-vcr-like behavior of the HD recorder, on the whole, you are
right - the best damn picture I've ever seen out of a SD box and they have
pretty decent local support too, which is more than I can say for the
blasted 1st gen Thomson heap which can't even get it's LCN right ;)
