I've not long had my NEC 50" plasma and HD set top box and have been
checking out some of the HD material around of late. I must say my jaw
nearly hit the floor after seeing the IMAX "Amazon" documentary on 70 on
Saturday evening at 6:30 (Sydney). The quality (to me) was outstanding,
vastly superior to any other broadcast I've seen to date (which isn't that
much so far). I'm now hanging out for next weeks presentation.

And that's only 576p - wait til you see a -true- HD picture (on a true HD
display)

Yes indeed. It is hard to imagine an image could be even better than that!!

Pity Seven's HD looks no better than their SD on my HD display. See, my HD
display is a 1024x1024 ALIS panel, which is interlaced, so progressive signals
get converted to interlaced and I lose the benefit. Some dark scenes look almost
blocky on the HD channel compared to the SD channel.
I've seen some 1080i stuff though, and that looks bloody awesome on my display.

You can see some HD samples courtesy of microsoft - only on your computer,
unless you can connect it to your TV.

It's debatable as to whether 1024x1024 ALIS panels are really high def. The
fact that it's not capable of progessive scan is a worry. If you take the
generally accepted standard (outside of Australia's warped standards) of HD
being either 720p or 1080i, you'll note that your screen is incapable of
displaying either natively. I'd be more comfortable if these screens were
marketed as ED (extended definition). That being said, they do look awsome
with a 1080i signal.
The misunderstandings, misnomers & straight out lies about digital TV in
Australia are appaling. As of December, only 658000 STB's had been sold in
Austrlia. Compare that with DVD player sales & then consider how many hours
of FTA most people watch compared to DVD. In a public company, if you'd
presided over such a failed introduction of a technology, you wouldn't have
retired gracefully & swanned off to a private consultancy. You also wouldn't
have been in your late 50's & completely out of touch with technology.
