What would you define as "old"?
Excluding the SBV variant, the Hiace 100 Series (and Commuter 120
series LWB bus derivative) have been around since about 1990.
There have been numerous changes in that time, but it's still
basically the same vehicle...

Sorry, are you saying that Toyota is going to rebadge Kia Pregios as Toyota
Hiaces?
The pics of the new Hiace on Toyota's site don't look anything like the
Pregio.

Yes but is it intended to replace the HiAce?
It would seem to a very stupid move on Toyota's part if thats what they
intended.

The company my brother in law works for replaced their 8 Hi Aces over
the last couple of years with MB Sprinters.
They cost approx $10,000 more than the HiAce but have vastly superior
braking, handling, ride, power and fuel economy.
A couple are due for replacement soon and the boss intends to continue
buying Sprinters so he must be happy with the running costs.

They cant do any worse than the Hiaces of the last two years. My daily
driver for work is a 2.4 Hiace, thirstest bloody POS ive ever driven. You
even need to turn off the AC to climb hills without changing down a gear or
two. Mechanically good as usual with Toyos but hell drives waaaayyyy to
much like the vans of old.

Friend has one for work and he says its the worst van hes ever had and hes
driven a few, silly things like mirrors falling off, interior handles
braking, million dollar windscreens etc, hes going back to a Hiace. (not
that I think thats a wise move)

I don't think so either, and I couldn't imagine Toyota wanting to risk the
Hi-Ace's excellent reputation on an unproven cheap Korean van.
For what it's worth, the Mitsubishi Express is an *excellent* van for the
money, and is close to half the price of a Hi-ace.

Weirder things have happened. Toyota sold the 'lux as
a Taro with a VW badge!?!?!?
God knows who they are in bed with these days :-(

Old is when they look outdated. They can get at least 5 more years out of the
current body.

It must be getting old enough to be either proven or disproven.
I wish i could find out more first hand info, not the friend of a
friend of a friend stuff that has probably got far more prejudice than
fact. I'm thinking the lack of stories about this van is a sign that
they're pretty reliable.

I believe you're right. For some strange reason it doesn't pay to
confuse Mitsubishi commercials with their domestics.
I bear some respect for them since a work colleague managed to drive
one of their diesel vans in a punishing manner using petrol vehicle
like revs for about 18 months without so much as an oil change, and
finally was forced into servicing it when it broke a rocker.
I'd sure hate to be the sucker buying that van afterwards but the
engine survived that abuse. Albeit with probably a severely shortened
life.

Hiace page:
http://toyota.jp/Showroom/All_toyota_lineup/hiace/index.html
If you can be bothered:
For pics of the "Modellista" version select the 3rd menu down on the
left under word "HIACE" It will pop up and extra menu selection, select
the second option there.
6th down on the left shows pics of the standard version.
See who says all that Japanese study is not handy.
