I was digging around under my house and found a newspaper from 1985. The
first ad I saw was for a new Daihatsu Charade for $9450. Comparing that to
the 2005 price of $10985 shows just what a bargain that is.
I then compared the real estate section, 4 Bed Beach Front at Curl Curl
(1985) - $199,000. Beach Front at Curl Curl (2005) - 1.5Mil (at least).
There is also an article about the *new* Mitsubishi Magna. Without going
into details, the first paragraph reads:
"Mitsubishi had a dream run with the launch of the new Magna... with
compliments flowing more freely than any new car release I can recall..."
Oh dear...

More on this. The Standard Features on the new Magna include:
Locking Fuel Cap (woohoo)
Reclining Front Seats (bonus)
Carpet (I wonder what the alternative was?)
Two Door Bins (Good thing you don't have to pay extra for those)
Rear Coat Hooks (That sold me - where else would I put my coats?)
Three Passenger Grab Handles (Erm -can't think of anyhting witty to say
about that)
It pushed out a massive 83kw and did 0-100 in 12.4 seconds.

Yep, better than most

Vinyl like the rest

didn't they also clain it was only 5kw less than fords so called big
six?
of course they didn't mention that it was the 3.3l six not the 4.1
they also claimed a 200kg extra towing capacity over the ford

You had to wait a few years for the James Bond blue smoke screen feature.

The Holden at the time was the mighty VK and it had all of those
features and more, even in the exec model.
And at a price of around 13k was certainly more of a bargan then a
crummy charade.

My dad bought one new in 1985. His previous car was a Chrysler Sigma (1600cc)
which I learnt to drive in. I can remember my first drive of the new Magna
when he bought it and thinking "Oh wow, this has got heaps of power!" :D

Yup, and not only are cars aburdly cheap now - they're also faster,
quieter, better equipped, and safer.
Then again, this is a 20-year time gap; try comparing the quality of a
1985 car with a 1965 car and you'll see a similar difference.

We were looking at buying a Charade Turbo in 1985, and the price
was the biggest downside. We ended up with a GC Swift for about
8 grand on-road.
I wouldn't be comparing the current "Charade" with the mid-eighties
ones either. Like comparing a RWD 323 with a Mazda 3 (size wise,
anyway, in reverse) Bugger it, somebody might know what I mean.

Exactly. The current Charade is a joke - it is a Class A car, the smallest
type (hence the price tag of $10,990). The old Charade was a Class B in
size. The current Charade is 3-door only, while the '85 Charade was a
5-door.

Err, did you mean that to be punny?
charade
n 1: a composition that imitates somebody's style in a humorous way
[syn: parody, lampoon, spoof, sendup, mockery, takeoff, burlesque,
travesty, pasquinade, put-on] 2: a word acted out in an episode of the
game of charades

The same goes for the Mirage and Echo - they're not real cars either :)

Actualy i was refuring to the efi model, the non efi was only 11k
It also had aircon and power steering, which im pretty sure were not available in
the charade at the time.
