Just wondering,
I have a HD set top box and when connected through the component cable It
tells me on the display that the signal its recieving is 1080i. Is this
false or is the HD set top box upscaling it to a HD resolution.....The TV I
have is a 42" Plasma LG RT-42PX-11 SD set

The STB is outputing 1080i, but your plasma is just scaling it to its
native resolution of 854x480.
True HD is 1920x1080, which your plasma cant physically do. Yes its
recieving 1080i from the box, but its been scaled to 480p.

I see what you are saying but the picture quality if far superior than the
SD set top box I have, so if the HD set top box ios sending HD signal and
the Plasma is showing a SD picture why the difference?

Could be the quality of the internal scaler on the panel.. could be how
you have it connected... I presume you are using DVI/HDMI or YUV/RGB ?
As an aside, I can't see why you would bother with a HD STB on a SD
resolution plasma panel, it can't cope natively with Aussie SD resolutions
@ 576 let alone HD @ 1080.

Well HD boxes on SD plasmas made a fairly big difference actually,
since SD is interlaced, 576i, whilst the HD boxes will do 576p, and
upwards.
That on an SD plasmas does make a helluva difference.
Much more than using a HD panel with a HD box.
**** awaits flames!!! ****
sorry guys, but when watching two plasmas a HD & an SD side by side
with identical boxes, both using DVI, on the same channels, seeing a
$1500+ price difference, and barely noticing any difference in the
picture, HD just isn't all that its priced to be.
Although that'll all change when / if they ever improve Australias poor
HD broadcasts, or channel seven moves away frm 576p.
Also HD - DVD is on the horizon.

and ? the SD panel can't display 576p, only 480p so it needs to downscale.
the fields from 576i on DTV should be relatively easy to "merge" into a
frame

Then don't go HD if it's not for you

but when I press the display the format on the Plasma it says 1080i at 60HZ
.. But when I run a DVD it tells me 480p at 60HZ, which I know it true...is
there a possibility that I am viewing a HD TV through the set top box?

When your plasma can display the whole HD signal you'll have a point.

That's the input signal... and it means you are connected using an
interconnect that can support that bandwidth

Which confirms you are using a progressive DVD player via an interconnect
that can support that bandwidth. As an aside if you are seeing this from a
R4 or R2 (euro) DVD then your player is downconverting to 480 from 576, if
that is the case you might like to turn "progressive" off and see if your
plasma does a better job, if it's from a R1, try it with an R4 and see what
you get.
> is there a possibility that I am viewing a HD TV through the

Not at it's native reolution, plasma panels can't suport it and you advised
you are using an SD display (ie 480p only), it's throwing away 100's of
lines of information for you. This may or may not be important to you,
another poster advised he can't see the difference, to me it's night and
day but I can't speak for what others see.
