I posted this in another thread and hope it's ok to ask again.

A friend and I want to get our PS2's modded and I'm trying to do a bit of research before we get them done. I have an older 39002 version and his one is the slim line version. We bought quite a few games from OS which I'm sure are backups due to their price. They include PAL, ntsc u/c and ntsc J, I also would like to backup some of my original PAL games and play my backed up PS1 games of all kinds if possible.

With the above info, could anyone recommend a chip that would meet all those needs and give any other advice on things I may need to know before modding our PS2s? Also if there are any good sites that someone can recommend which discuss mods and other relevant info that would be most appreciated.

    Thanks for your time.

ps2 I dont know much about PS2 mods but here it goes...

If you want a mod just for playing backups I would get the duo2 se (for V1-V10) or for the slimline V12 the Apple chip. Don’t bother with the magics as they are out of date and mostly they are clones.

If you need extra features in the chip like flash and memory card exploit get the Matrix infinity. The other top of the line chip is probably the DMS4 pro which can do everything and can even be used for games on DVD9 like GT4.

If you are having trouble locating modders check your local Trading Post, www.tradingpost.com.au and run searches on www.google.com.au. Premodded consoles are also often sold on www.ebay.com.au - of course always be wary of dodgy traders.

    Sites such as: http://www.quantronics.com.au/?_s=pr...s2&_subcat=mod
sell modchips for the PS2 and will give you an idea of what is available.

    Zerotech,

Are you 100% sure that DMS4 Pro chips are able to be installed in the slimline PS2? According to my link above, they are not compatible.

Yeah I've done some research over the Matirx Infinity and my opinion I'll rate it 2nd best chip after the DMS4 Pro.

I've kind of regretted getting a magic chip without the flash upgrade which is what i'm looking for and the Matrix Infinity can do that so I'm leaning towards it.

My oopinion davoz is that I'm not sure 100% if a DMS4 Pro can be installed on slim PSTWO but my guess is that it could.

Cheers for the reply. I'm a bit confused about the matrix chip cause at their site they have 2 versions and I also found this version at another online store called the SE. Do you know what the difference between them is? Would it also be ok to install a matrix in the slim line PS2?

    http://www.infinitymod.com/cgi-bin/m...?page=products
    https://www.smartgadgets.com.au/live...&ProductID=204

Finally, about the DMS4 pro which is "solderless" does this mean the installation is rather straight forward or would I also have to take it to a pro?

According to my research the home brew version i think allows you to do more more than playing games, i think it allows you t odo other stuff like programming and stuff while the normal infinity just plays games and dvds.

You can see on the link I posted that the matrix chip works with V1 to V12. I dont know much about PS2 mods so I couldnt tell you what the difference is. Try emailing quantronics or the place that showed it. You wont require the homebrew versions that allow you to run homebrew software.

I dont know about PS2 installs but I would prefer to have the soldered version installed by a pro, they are much more secure within the console that way. I would think that the solderless versions are still difficult to put in, and if you are in sydney its not worth your time or the saving to do it yourself.

Matrix Infinity SE are clones of the real matrix infinity. It has the same function as the genuine chip but you can't change the settings on it's menu as it will corrupt the chip and only way is to replace it. But as long as you don't want to change the default settings of the chip, then the clone would be just as good at a fraction of the cost of the genuine. They work an all version PS2 including slimline but I suggest a laser fix is installed on slimline such as the summone fix regardless of which chip is used. Also romoe mod is recommended for V9/V10.

    Cheers !!!!

i want to get a PS2 to play USA (NTSC) games aswell as Australian (PAL) games...
do i need a mod chip? or is there a boot disc or something.
also is it legal to burn your own games to keep the original in good condition to sell with PS2 down the track (like when PS3 comes out) - if so where can i get a mod-chip job done in melbourne

    Thanx

    Travis

With the new copyright and digital media laws, it's illegal to even make backups of your own games.

After doing a bit more research I've decided to get the matrix chip for both PS2s. Would it be better to purchase the chip myself and have someone install it?

If anyone knows of a reputable source in the Sydney area to have the mod done on both PS2s please let me know.

    Cheers.

Just cross check prices and whatever is cheaper to do obviously go with that. I do not live in Sydney so I cant tell you about reputable modders, just shop around, see who offers the best prices and go with them. Some even offer warranties which is always good for peace of mind.

is it worth modding a ps2? (discussion)

is it worth spending around $200 to mod a ps2? i've been tempting to mod it, but i dont know if its worth it, i want it mainly for ntsc games since most of the good ps2 rpg games never really come out in aust. or pal for that matter. Even if i did want to get it, where can i get it from? I went to liverpool a couple of weeks ago ( sydney, nsw) and went to 2 shops both that can mod chips..but when i asked them questions... specificly on chips... they hesitated..then just said "we install latest mod chip, works 100% blah blah blah" which makes it abit more hard to make a decision....

    anyways thats my thoughts....

If it's the newer slimline PS2 I would be careful, there are plenty of reports of laser failure due to modchips, if it's an earlier model though they are fine when modded.
