Telefunken Divx DVD Player with USB built in

    Hi Guys,

I was just in Target and noticed a Telefunken Divx dvd player for $139.

What caught my eye was the USB port on the right side of it AS WELL as a card reader.

The box showed how you could connect a USB hard drive to it.

The only thing mentione was USB - For MP3's.....

I am wondering if anyone know anything about this machine?

I suspect you probably could play divx from a USB hard drive.

    Cheers,
    AGRAJAG

People are already doing this with some of the MediaTek based players.

Just bought one to test and so far looks promising.
Plugged a usb 2.0 caddy drive in (STB pocket size hard drive) and played a compressed avi file.
Also played a mpeg video clip.

any updates ? 15% off this weekend

Target have 15% of this weekend. so it brings it down to 138-15%=$117

Not bad for that price as it already has USB connection

I have an LG 8900 and I bought the telefunken to try out the usb. First of all, build quality of the unit is second rate and the remote is terrible.
On the divx front, it played everything I threw at it without any audio synching problems - very impressive.

However I bought the unit in the hope that I could connect my 40G Ipod to it and play movies and music from it. This unfortunately did not work because my ipod did not have an external power source and the usb port on the unit didn't have enough grunt to power my ipod. So back to the shop it goes.

Thanks for taking the time to purchase/test the unit.

Target have a no questions asked return policy so it's fairly easy to go buy it, test it and return it if your not happy.

Excellent.....I'm going to grab a couple for testing - will report back.

Going to give one to my parents so I don't need to convert any more.

has anyone checked yet what sort of chipset this is using? Or done some file compatability testing (ie gmc, packed bitstream)? Does it support subtitles? How many characters does it display for filenames? What sort of zoom options does it have? Does it display id3 tags?

    Just a few questions

    Hi Guys,

Found this thread via Google after trying to find ANY info on the Telefunken DVD 223 player, as featured in today's Target catalogue.

For $99, I've definitely got my eye on it, but if some of you are going to get one today and test it, maybe I can wait a day...

Alternately, *I* could be the one to get one today and let everyone know if ti's any good, eh? That's if their return policy on DVD players is no-questions-asked

$99 looks good. Let us know how it performs.

I've purchased one of these players today and will be testing it out when I get home from work with my 80GB USB drive.

The player has component out, VGA out as well.

Yeah, I purchase one today too. What is a good way to test it's DivX capabilities?? I have some DivX movies, and I can and will see if it plays them, but is there some test DivX movies I can download or something just to test my player??

Search for links to the German & French DivX test discs.

Bought 2 at $99 each , now the test

    Thursday 26th May 2005

    Telefunken TDV223

Bought 2 from Target at $99 each ( obviously with the intent of returning if it doesn’t pan out )

Seems filled with all that a fellow would want:
    ‒ DIVX
‒ Memory card and USB 1.1 interface
    ‒ Audio out : 5.1 ( 6 connectors ) , plus the usual optical interface.
‒ VGA out is included ( this is sweet )

The manual ( or more aptly , a collection of sheets translated from English to Chinese and back to English.. a couple of times ) states limitations on the DIVX :
    - GMC (1 point ) : NO
    - Q-pel : NO
    DV AVI : NO
    win AVI : NO
    Short header : NO

    The rest .. Yes

The famous “test” disk that others have in order to test out the Mpeg4 capabilities is required . Could somebody provide me with a URL for it ( the original URL is dead ).

Tried some DIVX - okay .

    Tried mpeg2 ( taken from DVB-T using Technotrend reception software ) - Has a problem : can’t get the 16:9 ratio ( letterbox ) . It plays distorted .

As to region free - Target advertise that all of their DVD players are or can be made region free . I haven’t bothered with this yet, as the problem with the MPEG2 is critical as to keeping the player.

    well I wasn't so lucky.

My optical out is not working.

I also bought the LG one from the target catalog. (With the intent of keeping the best one)

The optical out on the LG one works fine.

I realise that the dodgy telefunken one might just be bad luck, but I was swaying to the LG for better build quality.

However, when playing a test AVI (turns out is it an XviD), the picture quality on the LG left a bit to be desired. Lots of artifacts/stuff up. (Not sure the propper technical term)

On the other hand, the Telefunken produced a much better picture.

So I guess I have to return the Telefunken, get a replacement, and re-evaluate.

I'm currently d/l via bit torrent a test cd.

Took a bit of searching around, but found this on doom9:
