Are girls smarter than boys (at schoolwork)?

It is opined that a majority of girls seem to do better than boys at school esp. with literacy skills. Currently, there is debate that there is probably no difference in which gender is "smarter". What do you think?

I don't believe either gender is smarter, I think it's more who applies them selves in their studies IMO.

I don't think one gender is smarter than he other, it really comes down to study habits and your enviornment.

However, I do believe that one gender is generally more apt at one subject than another. Having worked in the science and engineering sector of a university for the last 4 years, it appears that men have a better aptitude for maths and physics generally and females are better are literature, psychology and biology. (These are very broad generilisations though. It may be that men just have more intrest towards engineering and females are more interested in Science)

We're off to a great start, aren't we.

As sillie pointed out, I think it's been founded that males achieve greater results in logical areas, where as women, they're left with the illogical side of things.

Actually, opined is a word. It means to state an opinion. Girls = 1, Boys = 0

Well I'll be. I'm the one to drop the ball.
At least I learnt something new.

Of course, I could just use my knowledge of editting threads to delete the last few posts, but where's the fun in that?

Poor Linton......the first time in ages to get something wrong.

    Yeh....I reckon there's no difference.
But Boys generally do better in Maths, Engineering and Physics etc.....
Girls do better in English and the Arts.

BTW, I got the Excellence in Maths Award for my year level this year!

If there is a difference, it is so small that it makes very little difference.

I always found the girls in my class blew the boys out of the water in mathematics, whereas the boys were on average better at writing and literature. Just a quirk of the group of people involved I expect.

A doco I watched on intellectual development in adolescents pointed out that teenage hormones in men are pretty much the equivalent of a frontal lobotomy, which I tend to agree with (from experience!) . So I wouldn't be surprised to learn that teenage girls have, on average, more aptitude towards humanities and expository tasks during these years, whereas the boys would generally fall back to areas that have "right" and "wrong" answers (I know maths and science are far from that definite at an advanced level, but at high school we're really just talking about making equations and formulas work ie. rote learning and its application).

    Who knows. Not me.

It's more about the distraction, I think. My little brother was academically better than both myself and my other brother until my parents decided to move him from an all boys school to a co-ed one in years 11 and 12. God only knows what they were thinking His grades took a steady decline from that point on and never recovered. He'd discovered the opposite sex and they were far more entertaining than homework

i dont think that either gender are smarter than the other! i think we all have the brain power to learn but we all learn differently! i also think that males and females learn differently and the way that it is taught in schools does not suit everyone and therefore it comes across as some being brighter then others!

I dont see that there is any point in making sweeping generalisations about girls vs boys.

I don't think sweeping generalisations are EVER useful in ANY situation.

I started off the year being better at Physics and Maths (my C mark was better than my B). But over the course of the year these subjects got harder and more repetitive and I put more effort into my humanities. Guess what my results are now?
