sp2 will download but wont update

Hi all,

I am helping a friend try to load sp2 on his (windows xp home
edition) machine. He has sp1 loaded already. When we click the
update link, it will let us download the sp2 patch, but when we
try to install it, nothing happens. We have tried several times.

Recently he had a lot of viruses and spyware on his machine which
I have since removed. Is it possible a virus has damaged a file
needed to perform the update?

I know very little about xp, I am still using 98 SE :-)

Check for damaged/missing system files:
Start/Run
Type "sfc /scannow" ENTER
Have the Windows XP CD available..
