Multiple programs crash upon starting

I use WINXP Media edition. Recently all of my third-party programs have begun
to "encounter problems and need to be closed" upon startup. This includes
firefox, trillian, filesharing programs, etc. In most cases I can move the
error window and continue to use the program. I've tried every repair I can
think of and it's time to ask for help from better men. Things I've already
tried:

Virus scan (Norton AV 2006)
Ad-aware
XP Repair Pro 2006
All available Windows updates
Uninstalling unneeded programs
System Restore (back to before I encountered problems)
A registry repair program

I'd really hate to wipe the disk and start clean. Can anyone think of any
other solutions?

No. Delet partition, repartition and reformat the hard drive. Install
Windows.
