    Inexpensive Divx DVD player

Anyone know of an inexpensive Divx player available through any of the
retail stores. Looking for a few cheapies as gifts - would prefer retail
    rather than online.

    Thanks

I purchased the Pioneer DV-383 earlier this year from JB-HiFi for about
$130 dollars. Plays DivX and XviD files very well. The only annoyance I
had with the player was that it only displayed the first 8(?)
characters of the filename, but this was fixed by installing some third
    party firmware.
I've posted my thoughts on the player in a previous newsgroup posting -
you can read it on Google Groups: http://tinyurl.com/y7mrsj

Pioneer and Panasonic have models for about $130 or so.
I've seen some dirt cheap no brand name ones for as low as $39 but if
I was buying I rather pay the extra for a Pioneer or Panasonic.

I purchased a Conia at Hardly Normal earlier this year for $37. Plays everything I have thrown at
    it.

And that appears to be (even though the wording is just a shitfight)
    with 5 speakers...

Either that or they're selling a "DIVX compatable" AMP whatever the ****
    that means...

My Pioneer DV-969AV connected via HDMI and upscaling to 1080i seems to throw
up green blotches of interferance every now and then when watching some DivX
burns. It doesn't happen with DVD's however...not sure if it's the players
fault or not but never happened in my previous Pioneer model that didn't
upscale and wasn't connected via HDMI.

Yep - Conia is hard to beat for price....and I have an old one that is going
on 7 years old now and STILL works flawlessly.....

Seems that "Conia" is Chinese for "plays anything with a hole in it"

    Cheers!

I won my LG player, so very cheap!
The only annoyance I have is that it & my LG recorder. which I bought with a
Senior discount at Harvey Norman, won't play discs recorded by my Samsung
DVD recorder combo won by my wife, even when the discs have been finalised.
Fortunately the Panasonics play discs from both recorders.

How about running the test pattern provided and getting back
    to me.

I KNOW that the Pioneer DV-393 suffers from colour leakage,
but I haven't tested the earlier model Pioneer DV-383.

Could you please run the test pattern and come back with
    your results.

I was referring to imperfections caused by crap DVD players
and recorders NOT the display devices.

Including Divx (which is the topic of this thread)?

Have any of the better players that you've tested ever frozen during
    playback of a divx file?

I have an el cheapo Nu-tek DVD recorder (it cost me around $150 in
Safeway) that plays divxs either off DVD or via flash memory drive that
    plugs into a USB port.

I've not tested the USB function yet, other than a quick test of one
file to see if it works. But for the most part I've played avi files
that I've burned to DVD media. It plays OK, but on the odd occasion a
file will freeze the player during playback. Sometimes I can "free" it
up, if I hit the "rewind" button. Other times I have to power it down to
reset it. That happens only occasionally.

And yes, I know that it's a cheapy, but for what it can do as a recorder
and playback of divx/xvids, it's been fairly good value for what it cost
    me.

Is it DivX certified? If not, then I'm not surprised that
    it freezes.

Occasional freezes, no matter how occassional, are a pain.

I would only buy a certified machine.
