Strathfield Divx Players with Mediatek Chip ? XMS855 DVX222D

I'm looking at getting a new Divx player for Xmas , and Strathfield seem to have the best range of sub $100 players.
I went in today , and they recomended the Omni 1000 , but where out of stock , and mentioned they where getting a lot of new models in.
Does anyone know what is the pick of the bunch in these ? Mediatek chipset , and a decent loader....
There was an XMS for $65 , but it would probably be a sunplus at that price...

There are two new MediaTek based players, the XMS855D ($78) and the DVX222D ($68) the XMS has 5.1 output, the DVX has 2 channel output, both have digital output and will do 5.1 with an external amp. Both use the same chipset and Samsung loader, will handle packed bitstream files, subtitles etc

There is also a firmware update that will be released in the next few days that adds long file name support, sets the OSD counter during AVI playback to OFF by default and removes the ZOOM icon from the screen after a few seconds.

Aside from the cosmetics and the 5.1 anaolgue output on the XMS model they are essentially the same unit.

There are no XMS units with Sunplus chipsets at all

Are these the two models we have been discussing about? Are they available now?

Yes, these are the ones, most stores would have already recieved them by now.

    Yep, these are the ones.
I've been having a play with both of them.
Hope to do a page up soon for them.
So far running well, update is good.

Plays divx6 files well as well (no chapter points and menus, but no problems on my test files with embedded divx subtitles, multiple audio tracks etc)

There is no random play option (that I can find) for mp3 playback.
You can view all the files on the disc etc, but no random play.
If you (like me) don't really care about this, then no problem.

For file playback, they have been fantastic.
Region free out of the box, plays all the files that the Z340 did.
The DVX222 has more info on it's LCD screen than the XMS855 does, but the XMS855 has 5.1ch analog audio out.
If you will only be using stereo or digital audio out, then the DVX222 is identical and will save you some money.
If you want analog 5.1ch audio as well, then get teh XMS855.

Thanks for news guys. My Z340 is starting to be a pain from time to time. Might need an update.

bear with me here, im a bloody retard when it comes to this stuff but do these XMS players support dvd-r\rw and dvd+r\rw??? Also do they have an LCD display.

oh and while im here i might as well ask if theres a program out there that'll convert an xvid file to a divx file capable of being used on dvd players such as these? I know there are programs that will convert xvid to divs but will any divx files play on these players or do they have to be encoded in a certain way???

and lastly, where can i buy one in perth or on the net (would the Perth strathfeilds stock them aswell)?

    cheers in advance.

    Yes and Yes,
    Xvid files play already.
Strathfields should have them in Perth soon if not already.

Oh, and LCD screen, the XMS855 has a 4 character (number) display on the front, the DVX 222D has an 8 character (number) display.
The character size on the screens is about medium sized on the 855, and small on the 222.

Well , I just got the XMS855 for $68 on special. Seems fine , time remaining display is annoying , but new firmware should fix that .
At least the buttons on the remote are different shapes .
The tray doesnt sit in the middle of it's slot , but for $68 , who cares...

cheers. . . do those height dimensions include the little legs that some dvd players have, i ask because i only have 6cm of room (height wise) and will probably be going for the dvx222.

    How are they with:
    - MPEG custom quant matrices?
    - zoom steppings? (i.e. 1.2x, 1.5x, 2x, etc.)
    - zoom out?
    - packed bitstream? (I know jokiin said they support it, but...)

...and if it's not too much trouble, what are the specs of the video and audio DACs?

    Cheers,
    BAC

I'll have to check your sample on the custom matrices and get back to you - pretty sure I ran it through the other day and it looked good, but I was playing with a bunch of other stuff and it might be messed up in my head.

Zoom is the same as other MTK chipsets - 2x, 4x etc, 1/2x etc, not that great.

My packed bitstream files are playing smoothly.

specs on the audio and video DACs - that I don't know.
