Depends on the channel, some only bring the timer up every 30 mins, some run it all the time on movies, there are heaps of channels though so it's hard to know which ones do what ($5 a month gets you the basic 60 or so channels)

They have watermarks galore, advertising, multiple subtitles, all sorts of stuff going on, it's not uncommon for people to watch with the volume off and read the subtitles all the time, stuff that would drive the average user here crazy I'm sure

I have one central computer that stores everything (2TB storage now), and xboxes runing XBMC in all the rooms.
    .
    Via wireless or cable network?
Is that cheaper then, say, the Zensonic $500 something media centre?

I ran cable through the whole house - pain in the neck, but now it's done...
I buy the xboxes from EB Games second hand for $79, so very cheap, the only difficult part is doing the soft mod, which you need one of 3 specific games, and a way to get the game save onto the xbox.
You can also replace the hard disk if you want more storage locally.

oh, and it plays almost everything there is - processor is the limiting factor, so 1280x720 or higher is a bit of a struggle, but just about anything you can play on a PC will play on it (it uses Mplayer).

Not the cheapest option but the XBOX360 is an even better media center than the early XBOX, the performance when used with TVersity is excellent

If there's anyone in Perth with a remote for the DVX222D that they don't need any more (for the usual reasons), I could use one.

Maybe I should look at the XBOX360 media centre features. Could be the excuse I need. If only the original XBOX had a bit more grunt so that it could play HD movies it would be just about perfect imho.

Yes, HD is the one big let down - though at the moment not an issue for me.
The XBMC developers have been porting XBMC over to oher platforms, like the Apple TV box (still not enough grunt I believe for full HD), and OSX / Linux and even Windows. Looking pretty good, but of course you can't get the hardware as cheap as a second hand old style xbox.
