OK, just ran that sample you sent me a while back through the 222 - (pretty much identical firmware to the 855 except for 5.1ch analog and the LCD panel parts).
Anyway, shows up as 2.35:1 aspect ratio (small top/bottom bars on 16:9 screeen), no streaking of the stars, no blocking of the white coats that I can see either.

Well , I have flashed my 855 , and it now has long filename support , and the time display is no longer always on ...

Plays all my rewritable CD 's and DVD 's .

Comparable to units that cost twice as much now..

Bought the XMS855 earlier in the week and had to return two already. First, the player just didn't power up anymore... the second replacement did not play the subs as advertised on the box. Perhaps it is a bad batch I've been picking. Will try for a third replacement as it is a decent player at that price.

The only it doesn't do is play DTS soundtracks.

I wish I had a dollar for everytime I put my two cents worth because then I'd be $0.98 richer...

AndW can you verify that? Does this apply to both players or just the XMS?

If can't play dts then it is no good.....

All the formats listed on the box are supported, it's probably another issue that is causing your subs not to play, can you provide more details about what you are trying to play etc?

After updating the firmware , I found subs didnt work as they should till I did a reset under preferences. Try that before going any further.

Doing a reset after an update is always recommended, he hasn't done the update yet though so I'm guessing it's something else that needs looking out, subs on AVI's aren't as straightforward as subs on DVD's unfortunately

bought myself a dvx222d yesterday, so far so good, plays all my dvd fine, All avis have played fine bar a couple that skipped, timer\counter can easily be turned off with display button. Only complaint is the flimsiness of the disc loader.

Any time it skips past a file (if that is what you mean) it is because it is an unsupported format, the firmware update will default the counter to OFF

It will pass the DTS signal to an external amp to be decoded via optical or coaxial

    DTS downmixing is not supported.
I will have to double check via digital, I don't use DTS usually myself.

edit - just read jok11n's reply re this.

To support DTS over analogue requires additional licensing costs, the majority of users that want DTS will normally have an amp with a decoder built in, those users are catered for with the DTS passthrough function.

If that is the case then it is OK then. We have amp in the home theatre.

However, with direct connection to a normal TV, I guess there is no downmixing to stereo for DTS then?

I just had a mate ring who went and got the XMS855D from Strathfield . He couldnt get it to work via component on his TV . Composite , and Svideo worked fine .
He took it back to the store who tried 4 different units , and couldnt get it to work , so he got his money back .
I reckon the Component output was set to S Video rather than Yuv .
I'm going to take my Firmware updated machine over , and see how it goes..

The default is svideo, so I think you are right there.

The licensing costs even to do that are the same, so no, won't downmix the DTS, no benefit from downmixing a DTS signal anyway.

Just got three xms885d units from Staithfiled in Cannington WA yesterday... Nice and small little unit. needed something to replace my ageing Z300. Very familiar setup etc. Played everything quite nicely so far... Good feedback from all.

ok, im now very dissapointed. . . suddenly none of my discs will work, every disc i put in the player comes up with "No Disc" does anyone know why it would be doing this to every type of disc i try and use.

If it is doing this on original pressed discs as well, I would suggest taking it back to the store and getting it swapped over.
