I'm currently doing up a section on my webpage for these players.
I'll have screen shots and photos up sometime today, with the review up as soon as I've finished it. (which hopefully will be either later today or sometime tomorrow).
    But.....
Personally I think these are fantastic value for money, the file support is a little better than say a Zensonic Z330/Z340, supporting pretty much the same files plus idx/sub graphic subtitles with correct coloring.
    The remotes work well.
The only thing they don't really do is random play on music files (that I can find).
The disc loader tray is of the 'thin' type, which some don't like, but it helps to keep the overall size of the player fairly small as well.
At $68 and $78 you are pretty much getting a Mediatek divxvid player that is in the pricing region of the Sunplus based players (and the MTK chipsets are a LOOOOOOOOONNNNNNNGGGGGG way better than the Sunplus chipsets).
If you haven't already bought one, I say go for it.
A DVX222D will set you back $68 or a XMS855 for $78 and I am pretty sure Strathfield have a pretty good return policy if you don't like it.
    (no I don't work there)
But, if you don't like it, I think you will have a hard time finding a player you do like for under $200 or so.

OK, the firmware updates are on the above link now.
Make sure if you do them you follow the instructions.
    Burn slow, finalise the disc.

Might be worth adding to this line
These are ISO disc images, so make sure you burn them as images with your burning software, do not just place the
ISO file on the disc as a file.
do not extract the iso as it is already prepared in the correct format

I ended up downloading both firmwares.

I don't own either of these players (at least not yet) but am interested in their potential as mules for firmware modded with the RISC blocks taken from other highly developed MT1389 firmwares.

The good news is the DVX222D firmware may indeed be RISC-compatible with the Yamada 6800X - a Euro machine that has had a lot of firmware development work to date with versions including goodies such as Nero Digital, OGG/OGM and DivX Ultra menu support.

A curious thing is the XMS-855 firmware brought up errors when I tried to scan it with the latest version of MTKRemaker - I don't know if the firmware was corrupt or if it uses some new formatting that MTKremaker can't handle.

andw, snooping through the DVX222D firmware showed there are data structures to support a dialogue volume control feature. Can you confirm if this is implemented in the DVX222D, please?

    Dialogue volume control?
There is a section in the edit: Dolby Digital settings for Dynamic Range Control, is this the same thing?

I bought a DVX222 today plus a Digital set top box. Nearly going to buy the XMS at the same time but thought I would try out the DVX222 and see what the quality is like.

My main reason for getting this is for playing avi files with subtitle files. So far the quality is good with the limited files I have played.

There is only one minor downside.
The avi files and its idx/sub files has 61 alphabets. It would play the avi files as though the idx/sub files do not exist. When I shorten the avi/idx/sub files' to 27 alphabets the subtitle would then be displayed. This happens both before and after the firmware upgrade and reset. My Zensonic Z340 would have not problem displaying subtitle with long file name as long as 80 alphabets or more.

Can you give a bit more info on this so it can be looked into, thanks

    Sure.

    My.brother.wedding.on.saturday.second.december.200 6.avi
    My.brother.wedding.on.saturday.second.december.200 6.idx
    My.brother.wedding.on.saturday.second.december.200 6.sub

The above will play but subtitle (in English) will not display. When press the subtitle button on the remote, a stop sign thingy would appear as though there is no subtitle files in the first place. The same set of files will play with subtitle properly displayed with the Zensonic Z340

    My.brother.wedding.on.sat.avi
    My.brother.wedding.on.sat.idx
    My.brother.wedding.on.sat.sub

The above will play with the subtitle properly displayed. When press the subtitle button on the remote the subtitle can be turned on or off.

You can try out the above easily by having two sets of identical avi/idx/sub and then change one of the set into long file name and then burn both sets into a DVD-RW. Then play both in the DVX222D and see what happens.

Most of my avi (with subtitle) have long file names. It would be a great nuisance not to be able to play them with the subtitle displayed.

Ok, thanks for the clarification, I really wasn't sure what you meant before, I'll be in China next week, I'll see what can be done about this, not sure if it is a simple fix or not but I'll ask anyway
