well a few months back it seemed that the previous person who lived here had her mobile attached to our house net plan. Apparently my housemate offered her the moneyz to pay for the internet only and nothing happened from there. So one day the internet isnt working... i call optus, spoke to a nice dude (surprisingly) and he shared with me the deficit on the account the members of the house all agreed to not pay the bill, as it was attached to someone else's mobile.

A couple of months and a $350 mobile phonebill later, i got myself a Virgin Mobile "premium" USB mobile broadband thingy ma-jig. Had it for about a week now. First couple of days seemed ok... and now its woeful.

Before buying, i weighed up the options of each provider and decided that Virgin was the best way to go. I bought a stick with 6GB on it which expire after 100 days. Then, i would sign up on a BYO stick plan, where i sign a contract and pay X amount for Y usage each month. I could then quit the plan anytime i wanted as long as there were no outstanding payments (theres no exit fee). Its because i dont want to pay or be responsible for the internet in the house.

Im using the Virgin Mobile connection manager and it connects ok and occasionally (more often recently) it just drops out and speeds are all over the place. The reception doesnt move from 99% but it will jump between UMTS, HSPA and HSPDA. Now, before we start playing the blame game on LP and how incompetent he is and how he should just buy a house and take charge of a normal internet connection, I would like to highlight that my phone has 3G issues at our house. It seems to work ok in most places and dropout as some 3G phones do (its an iPhone 4. not my fault! i lost my phone overseas and needed a new one ASAP and thats all they had *sigh*) but the house is consistently drop-in/drop-out. I havent taken the wireless modem out of the house yet, but its on my to do list. Theres an old silo at the end of the street with antennas on it. Looks like a suburban radio tower to me.

Took me a few attempted but managed to complete a speed test

Note: i looked around the interwebs and saw a forum where everyone was hanging shit on virgin broadband in the last 6 months. Saying terrible connections, terrible speeds at peak hours etc.

Anyone got anything to comment? any suggestions? would peak hour affect 3G??

yeah unfortunately Virgin is known for poor broadband, the network is over subscribed and they aren't doing anything about increasing capacity

    Bumpetypump.

How has the speed of your internet connection changed over time? I used this site to measure mine almost six years ago, and got this result:

    Just over three years ago

    Got to love how 15.27 was a C+ but not 8.56 is a B-

Yes, and similarly while 15.27Mb/s was faster than 58% of all connections three years ago, half the speed now is faster than 60%.
