Well not me but when I need to know anything about medical or whatever I type it in Google, that's all I know about checking things. Hope everthing is ok Livvie.

i found that sometimes having access to all the medical and pseudo-medical information may be bad, especially with all the whackos around so pick your sources carefully, he suggested thinking back.

I'm off to watch a movie, might watch a chick flick.
thanx shy. mum's got several major issues atm, and the doctors aren't freely sharing info, so we're just looking to find out something further.

    Take Tashammers advice too,livvie.

You may read about symptoms which sound similar to your issues, but are for a completely different diagnosis-you will end up thinking you have all sorts of things which you don't have at all.
Best off confronting the Doctors and asking them

sometimes the doctors just don't know. They can do all sorts of tests, take samples, biopsy to buggery and still not know. My aunt, bless her, died recently of something that the doctors wouldn't or couldn't put a name to. It was only after she had kicked the bucket that they finally named it pancreatic cancer. In between times Jean and the whole family were (still are) up in arms about the lack of knowledge.
Same with me. They did tests. Couldn't work it out. Did a fine needle aspiration. Didn't know. Did a plug biopsy. Didn't know until they had done a lot more tests of the plug. i reckon discerning between 1 little protein and another in 1 cell could be kinda hard yakka.

Even now, it is virtually impossible to get the oncologist to specifically utter the words. What he does is say it secondhand as in, "Well, this report here says that you have..." at the same time his face is looking mildly dubious. So i say, ok what stage is my disease and what classification (it has 4 Stages - by some i am in Stage IV and by others Stage II). The classification is another ball game according to where in the body the cancer has occurred - even this is not simple as the buggers keep changing how they assess.

So sometimes when doctors don't seem to be telling you things it may be because they aren't being told things themselves.

Livvie- When I was working as a childcarer, one of the children I was looking after had a rare type of brain tumor and I wanted to find out more info about it and googling it was bringing up very different answers -some of which totally contradicted everything else i had read! very frustrating. I found the best thing was to call the major hospital for the state (Hobart in my case) and ask to speak to the relevant department (sometimes you have to call back at better times) then they can usually put you onto a reliable website or contact person or even "introduce" you to a doctor/specialist who is "particually in the know" about that particular "issue" who may be able to email you some really useful info.
I ended up getting info from Melbourne before I really got any answers and it ended up really helping! and knowing how the brain tumor was affecting him and the "stages" of it really helped me to be there and continue to work for and be there for his family.(without being as freaked out as different things happened)
I thought maybe you and your mum could try this as sometime it pays to contact a different hospital/specialist in your state or even in another state and dont be afraid (although i get the feeling you wont be ) to get pushy/demandant if they tell you to ask your own doctor!
Hope you find the info you are looking for and hope everything works out.

If you're not happy with your doctor(s) then keep shopping around until you find one you can trust and like. Reading on the internet isn't going to give her a diagnosis, much less a treatment. Like with any profession there are good and bad...just because they practice medicine it doesn't always mean they know what they're doing.

we know all this, and we know what she has. we're just trying to investigate what kind of tests might be involved, not the actual conditions themselves

Then they should be answering your every and all questions. You're her next of kin and, assuming she hasn't asked them not to disclose any information, you have every right to know what sort of treatment they're giving her. Try being a little more insistent with them. If you're not sure what to ask I'd be happy to offer advice if you want to share her diagnosis.

she has bladder problems and cysts in both kidneys, which they say aren't problems in themselves atm, they just need monitoring (in the case of the bladder, she's catheterised), but she has an adrenal adenoma, which is secreting hormones and it looks like she has to have the other half of her thyroid out. she just got the results back for the adenoma, which shows that its secreting hormones, and the specialist is sending her for another blood test to see if the results are the same. if so she has to go to john hunter hospital and have more extensive tests, which are the main tests we are wondering about. her endocrynologist is a really nice guy, is a great doctor but is in newcastle, so a 3.5-4 hour trip from here, and her doctor here is hard to get into, and communications between the 2 haven't been too good so far, which is why we're doing our own research. i go to all her doctors/specialists appointments, i did bio at school and am very interested in anything medical, so i go along because i understand more than mum, but what she knows, i know. we just don't know very much, and everything is getting thrown at her in one go

Sounds like you're pretty well on top of things. You probably know a damn site more than your average lay person. Knowing what tests they want her to do would help you a lot, that way you could get an idea as to what direction they're moving in.

Livvie I hope it's not stressing you out too much considering your expecting. I know it's impossible not to worry about your mum, but just make sure you take it easy.

I really hope the new tests shed some more light on the treatment she will require and she can get on with healing. I guess it's the waiting and wondering game that's most annoying you, right??
