I had to call Telstra several times in the last couples of weeks because of problems with my internet, one of the calls I got an American lady and on the phone I found her hard to understand and she was the same with me. I'm always a soft spoken person but I had to repeat myself all the time and at one point she told me not to "cuss" in english "curse" it took me a while to work out what she meant, in the convesation I had said "damn" and that's what she meant, to me damn isn't swearing but trying to talk to her was so hard and she made it seem as if I was talking a language she'd never heard before...very strange. I think with her job learn the way we speak and if damn is cussing as she put it she's lucky she didn't get one of my daughters that at times has a real potty mouth.

They just hang up on you after warning you for cursing and you continue, not that its happened to me but I was told by a Telstra rep recently that they'd disconnect the call if I cursed. Since you brought up Telstra, I feel like I won the lottery. I think I've spammed a lot about my indecision about upgrading from the iPhone 3Gs to the iPhone 4, and then ... I'm not sure if I've rambled about it or not but I ended up at the Telstra midnight launch of the iPhone which was like a last minute spur of the moment decision, so its not like I'm some sort of weirdo gadget enthusiast (I hope next time they go with 12 megapixel camera and use bleeding edge battery solutions that are said to at least double efficiency by... I'll spare the manufacturing details of it, and iron out things and cut things that aren't necessary like overpowered processor and gpus that drain battery life, and enable at least the ability to install proper codecs and players that can handle normal streaming protocols and don't put a glass back on it next time and don't try to continue to make it any thinner).
Right so anyway I turned up to the iPhone launch 4 hours before they opened at the Telstra store and walked away with it at 1 am, then crossed the street to go to the MacDonalds and passed by all the Apple Store groupies who were waiting in the cold and didn't have celebrity Masterchefs cooking them finger foods or staff bringing them coffee or TV crews covering them or people organizing games and so on and so forth.
So I passed by all the Apple Store groupies directly across the street, sitting down on the hard concrete freezing cold who still had to wait 8 hours for their store to even open.
Then the trouble started and the first day when they were supposed to activate the phone number they screwed it up, then they screwed up my bonus data (3 times), then ... hell I don't even remember how many things they screwed up but I started keeping conversation numbers and details in files back in October and just finally got everything resolved today.
As a result of really ... well they are actually pretty nice on the phone but the results just don't happen, and after being screwed around 3 times formally and twice informally and being redirected to Apple when asking to talk to a supervisor and being accidentally disconnected and then finally with the small cursing issue which wasn't at someone but saying something like "stupid ****ing detail that your company should be able to resolve..." or along those lines, and getting the snob approach of threatening to disconnect the call followed by a supervisor who denied in turn having a supervisor above herself that I was able to talk to I brought up the fact that over a month prior I had called twice trying to get a copy of my contract as Telstra ushered us out with just phones and a SIM card and wouldn't let me have the contract nor was responsive to phone calls. This ended up in the formal complaints department, not because I cared but because I was so livid about their overall incompitence about every other detail including billing to add to the above. Oh yeah and that they failed to put the extended warranty on the phone so I had actually chase them down to give them money for that.
Anyhow, its most likely that the guy who processed me that night didn't know what he was doing, or whoever handled the paperwork the next day didn't know what they were doing, and my contract was lost or perhaps everyone from the Sydney iPhone launch just doesn't have a contract, but after getting pissed off that I wasn't getting callbacks about my complaints when they said they would and staying on top of it, and letting loose the argumentative asshole American that lives inside of me because it would piss me off to get a new case manager every time and to not have them know what was going on or to fail to have the notes from the previous conversation.
What was I saying? Anyway... in the end they have credited my account for 4 months and additionally stated that they attached a note to my account stating that they could not find my contract and that as such we have resolved that I would like to be on the same cap without a contract, and since they just did free unlocking that means I have a free unlocked iPhone for $249 rather than $999 with ... actually its a little more than four months credit so I don't know how they came up with the number but I'm not arguing, and with no contract I can upgrade the phone when I want to without worry of paying out of it. I can also switch back to a suck ass carrier that doesn't provide good signal quality without having to pay out the contract. I made them fax me a statement with... I finally did get a case manager that suck with me rather than having everyone, so he faxed over a statement with my complaint ID number and all other details stating that about the contract as well.

The moral of this story is that Telstra sucks ass in everything except for having people with nice personalities (useless within their own system though) and good mobile coverage, but that even a big bureaucracy has to follow rules. So don't vote for John Howard as Prime Minister because he's all about screwing the little guy. Also, don't donate to wikileaks because the CIA might kill your ass! They might even send Hilary Clinton to do the hit.

Yeah, so I haven't seen my bill yet and I haven't tried to upgrade early yet, but after the Telstra complaint department failed at every attempt to get the store to fax them my contract I think its simply lost or possibly even invalid and maybe I signed in the wrong place or something as they were ushering us through like cattle to get everyone in and out without really... like actually I didn't even leave with a tax invoice or a contract and it was the same for 500 other people that night as well, so leaving wouldn't be any more a problem in the future even if it is a problem... I'd just have to go through the same bullshit again.

Months ago even. It's embarrassing to have done it like that but it relieved tension at the time...

frustrating when things have to go to that level to get results unfortunately, sounds like a good outcome though
