    Will this work?

I got the following info in an e-mail.

The question is, will it work?

How to protect your e-mail address book

A computer repairman says this is like having gold.

    This is a good thing.
I learned a computer trick today that's really ingenious in its simplicity.

As you may know, when/if a worm virus getsinto your computer
It heads straight for your email address book,
Andsends itself to everyone in there,
Thus infecting all your friends andassociates.

This trick won't keep the virus from getting
    Into your computer,
but it will stop it from using your address book
    To spread further, and
it will alert you to the fact that the worm has
    Gotten into your system.

    Here's what you do:

First, open your address book and click on
    'new contact,'
Just as you would do if you were adding
a new friend toyour list of email addresses.
In the window where you would type your
    friend's first name, type in
    'A'.

For the screen name or email address,

Now, here's what you've done and why it works:
The 'name 'A' will be placed at the top of your address book

    As entry #1.

This will be where the worm will start

In an effort to send itself to all your friends.

When it tries to send itself to AAAAAAA@AAA.AAA,

    It will be undeliverable

Because of thephony email address you entered.

    If the first attempt fails

(which itwill because of the phony address),

    The worm goes no further

And yourfriends will not be infected.

Here's the second great advantage of this method:

If an email cannot be delivered,

You will be notified ofthis in your In Boxalmost immediately.

    Hence,

If you ever get an email telling you that an email addressed to AAAAAAA@AAA.AAA could not be delivered,

You know right away that you have the worm virus

    In yoursystem.

You can then take steps to get rid of it!

    Pretty slick huh?

If everybody you know does this

Then you need not ever worry about opening mail from friends.

DO IT NOWand pass this on to all your friends.

no, this dates back years and you have received it as manual spam from some well meaning friend

recent worms and viruses don't use your address book or email client directly, you are more likely to get hijacked just to use your connection to send out random spam
Got caught out by my boss sleeping under my desk at work, told him I was planking, I've now been promoted to head of social media

No its bogus. Written by someone with a clear misunderstanding of malware.

Firstly, worms don't use your inbox to send emails. Why bother? email is a hack of the ftp protocol, as such your computer has the capability of sending emails at will. You can use any sending and receiving address you choose to plug into those values. The worm will send its own emails and you'll never receive a 'not delivered conformation'. In fact, because the account that sent the email never existed, the worm couldn't tell if the email was real if it tried.

So if you take away that concept the entire chain letter falls over. Changing the leading address book entry to aa@aa.com. ppht. Like a worm collecting data in such a way would sit on the first one wait for 2 days until it received a 'not delivered conformation'. The intention of such worms is to harvest all email addresses it can get. And then to use those email addresses in a coordinated spam message assault of the internet. It doesn't matter if the emails are real or not. The controller isn't sending the emails, the zombies are, with thousands of zombies and the thousands of emails per minute each one can theoretically send, why would you care.

Such people make money just selling the lists of emails gained from such harvesters (well more specifically, web crawlers).

As an aside, you can do that email thing (sending an email from wherever to wherever) in the form of IP. Its called IP spoofing.
